It’s a familiar story for a lot of people, they buy Microsoft Office, or it comes on their computer, and they wind up using the e-mail program, and Word, of course, but then completely ignore Excel because it seems unsuited for their needs, too bothersome to learn, or worse, too hard. The sad fact is, most of that is untrue for most people, because using Excel in a very basic way is neither hard nor complicated. In fact, is some ways it’s actually easier than using Word because it almost always makes sense. Below are ten good things that are worth doing at home with MS Excel at home.
‘” Create and use a budget. If this is not a good reason, I don’t know what is.
‘” Create a sheet of formulas. We all use them now and then, little formulas that we have to look up every time we need them; like converting between degrees Fahrenheit and Celsius, or from points to quarts etc. Why not just create a spreadsheet with all of the ones you ever use so it will always be there whenever you need to convert something.
‘” To create and use a simple database. Everyone has stuff that they would like to keep track of; and Excel is really good at letting you do that, even if you really don’t know much at all about how to use it. All you have to do is type in descriptions of your stuff.
‘” Keep historical data. What if you put everyone’s birthdate in a spreadsheet or your anniversary or other dates that you’d like to remember? Well, then you’d only have to check your sheet now and then to remember them all.
‘” Keep track of your investments. Yeah, yeah, it sounds too hard. But if you type in what your stock is worth every day, then not only will you have your own record of it, but you’ll know every day how your stock is doing.
‘” Use it to make charts and graphs. Well, yeah, that does require some learning, but honestly, it’s not that hard. And graphs are cool, so why not learn how to make them.
‘” Learn to use it. Knowing how to use Excel will make you more valuable at work. No matter what kind of job you have, if you know how to use Excel, you’re more valuable than everyone else that doesn’t.
‘” For things that use arithmetic. Most people have times in their life where they need to do some math (calculate floor space, etc.) This is the perfect time to use Excel, because it’s easier to see what you’re doing than if you try to use a calculator, because you can label everything.
‘” To impress your friends, colleagues, associates, family, etc. Because Excel intimidates a lot of people, if you can use it to do something useful, everyone else will start thinking of you as the smart one in the group.
‘” To give yourself something to do when you’re bored. Excel has so many features, functions and other stuff that you could literally make learning to use all that stuff an entire hobby of yours.
So there you have it, ten good things that really are worth doing with MS Excel.
