Teen Mom star, Amber Portwood, has been arrested in Anderson, Indiana on felony domestic abuse charges and felony neglect charges. The 20 year old star of the MTV reality show, Teen Mom, was arrested on Sunday December 26,2010 on felony charges following an investigation by child protection services and an episode of the show where she repeatedly hit and pushed her on-again off- again boyfriend, Gary Shirley.
Amber has a 2 year old daughter Leah with Gary and the two have had a tumultuous relationship during those two years. Their relationship has been a constant battle on the show and in real life. Several episodes of the last season of Teen Mom showed the two of them in arguments which became physical with Amber hitting, pushing, and yelling at Gary. Gary has left with the child and told Amber that she won’t see her anymore and Amber has fought over who should have the child.
In October, Amber lost custody temporarily of Leah, due to the assault that aired on MTV’s reality show Teen Mom. She has now been charged with felony neglect of a dependent. I have seen episodes on the show that make me wonder if she should have custody of the child as it seems that she wants to put herself in front of the child’s’ needs and she seems to not worry about how it affects Leah when Gary leaves and she is crying for him.
Gary continues to be an active part in his daughters’ life and tries to remain a constant in Amber’s life. He seems to genuinely care about mother and daughter and wants to provide a life for the three of them, but Amber seems to want more than Gary can give her. He seems to be a good father and has the support of his mother to help with Leah. He has never been seen striking back at Amber, even in the heat of the battles with her.
It seems to me that Amber has real issues with anger and could benefit from anger management classes and possibly some time away from Leah and Gary to figure out what she wants. Maybe the fame that has came along with being on the show has been a lot of stress on Amber or maybe she just is too young to be a single parent. Whatever it is, she needs to get her act together and realize that as a Teen Mom on the show, she should be setting an example for other girls that are in the same predicament as she is.
Amber is currently being held in the county jail on a $5,000 bond and faces up to three years in prison if found guilty on these charges. Being that the physical abuse is on tape, I am sure that it would not be hard to find her guilty. Hopefully, she can find a way to accept the fact that Gary needs to be a part of her child’s life for the next 18 years and that the two of them must find a way to get along without the physical abuse that we have witnessed this season on the show.
