I stay in touch with my family on a daily basis, and continue to enjoy sharing games, pictures, and news: online! Two technological features I have grown to cherish are Search Engines and Game Servers. I still can’t believe I use them, but I am glad I do!
Search Engines are incredible. If I want to find out who starred in “Casa Blanca,” I just type in the question. Yes! It is that easy. “Who starred in Casa Blanca?” Pages of articles will appear. If I type ‘Banca’ by accident, I will be asked if I meant “Blanca.’ Sometimes it will include both words and the results, and tell me it is including results for both. Instant forgiveness for typos is a wonderful gift.
I tend to research things into the ground. The most fun I have with a search engine is finding the question to give me the answer(s) I am looking for. Change the order of the words describing the search item, or think of other terms for it (football games as opposed to bowl games). Change it from singular (year) to plural (years). Spell it another optional way (honour as opposed to honor). Be more specific (Blue Moon, You knew just what I was there for as opposed to Blue Moon song). I have found that the “favorites” addition is spectacular. When I find something interesting that has nothing to do with what I want, I add the website to my favorites so I can return at a later date.
Thank you, Yahoo! and Google, for an entire spice cabinet of knowledge.
Game Servers are equally as entertaining. My favorite game server is Pogo. There are many games available free of charge. They have an extensive, worldwide membership. Several years ago, they offered a Club Membership, which my younger sister and I decided to take advantage of. We were sometimes not able to find a game room to play pinochle, solitaire, or gin. For the $3 a month it averaged, we had other rooms exclusive to club members, which gave us an opportunity to play the games we wanted. We could make the room private, which basically gave us the option of allowing only those players in that we chose to play with. In addition, our chat would not bother other players.
Besides the games mentioned above, I enjoy the daily crossword, word search, and trivial pursuit. Online jigsaw puzzles are a blast. Although they no longer create new ones, the years’ worth of monthly puzzles are available for all to play. Technique and practice are mandatory for mastering online bowling and miniature golf. Board games such as Yahtzee, Monopoly, Battleship, chess, and checkers are there for the enjoyment.
Many thanks, Game Servers, for allowing me to visit my friends from around the world in real time.
YCN is perhaps the biggest surprise of all. Instead of spending a lot of time and money on publishing and distribution, technology allows me to share my ideas, knowledge, ideas, and pictures with the world. Equally awesome, I can look at the production of hundreds of thousands of writers just like me. Never did I imagine technology like this – and it is just getting better!
