Stuck in a black room… this doesn’t feel like me, John thought. What is that in the distance? As it got closer he saw it had an ugly face and was all furry. It ran at him and attacked him!
Monsters! Whoa, what a dream. John suddenly woke up sitting on his couch. He looked at his clock and realized he had to get ready for work in a few hours. That is what’s nice about being good friends with the boss; He doesn’t mind if you come into work a little late. John’s best friend, Stanley, was the owner of his own business. It wasn’t a big business, no, not at all. But it was a good business and he worked with chemicals, which they both thought was interesting. They enjoyed their job and were able to choose when they took their lunch break. This was John and Stanley’s preferred job choice.
As John was eating his bowl of cereal, he thought about his dream. He thought about the ending, the part- …well, he couldn’t remember his ending. All he remembered was that it was startling. While he was eating, he got a call from his friend, Brian. Brian was a genius. He was still in college, even though John recently got out. Brian craved to become a doctor, to mend diseases, sickness, and injuries. One time when John broke his arm, Brian tagged along to the doctor so he could hear what the doctor had to say. He was very eager to learn and read in his spare time. He was a good friend.
“Hey, Brian! How’s it going?” said John, in between bites of cereal and milk. “Hey! I’m just heading to my second class. Shouldn’t you be at work by now?”
John replied, “Yeah, I should be. But you know that I have been friends with my boss since high school.” Brian was not happy that John’s friend was also his boss. He felt it was unfair to the other employees and was not disciplining any lessons to John . He also was not fond of his boss. He didn’t like how he fiddled around with chemicals. With Brian being the scholar that he was, he knew that it wasn’t safe or productive. He has given John hints of this but John never really payed much attention. John enjoyed tinkering with chemicals, too.
“It is a good thing that you found that job, John. You know that you are not responsible enough to keep a real job. I do not think you care enough about keeping a job. You also have to be careful with those chemicals you guys work with. They could be dangerous and start a fire or something.” Brian was a fun guy to hang out with, but he was also very responsible. He tried to subliminally teach John without him noticing; so he didn’t think he was a stick-in-the-mud. “You always say that, Brian, but I think that I could do just fine if I needed to find my own job. I would shape up .” John said as he finished his cereal.
He was still hungry so he picked up an apple to bring with him to work. John did not really like apples, but he always ate one if he was still hungry after breakfast. As he finished up his phone call with Brian, he thought, ‘Brian has to calm down and have some more enjoyment in his life.’
Once it seemed the two hit an end of their conversation, John said “Hey Brian, why don’t you come down after I finish work and you can help us with some of our experiments?” hoping Brian said yes. He knew Brian was smart and could help them if they mix two wrong chemicals. Besides, he would not be discordant with him. He would just leave them alone to work together if he was not happy with their work. Brian, not wanting to be any part of their antics, replied, “No thanks. I have a lot of work to get done and–“
“All right, Brian. I’ll see you later.” John interrupted Brian mid-sentence. He ended the call and put his cell phone into his jeans pocket. He tied his shoes, brushed his teeth, and put his glasses on and left his house. He felt today would be just like any average day.
