CHAPTER 12 Stanley was angry. He had a frown on his face and his arms were folded.
“Hey, Stanley.” John said, trying to start a conversation. He could tell that Stanley wanted to know his reason for missing work. “Alright, Stanley, come in. I will tell you why I missed work.” John said. He usually did not miss work. He just always came in late. If he did miss work, he told Stanley ahead of time and Stanley would usually understand. But John forgot about everything after he saw Brian’s creations. He completely blanked out. After John told Stanley what happened, Stanley was certain John was creating an excuse for missing work.
“John, I was not born yesterday. You could have just told me you did not want to go t work.” Stanley was aggravated. He was disappointed he gave John such perks and felt like he was being used.
“Stanley, I am telling the truth, I swear!” Stanley was not buying it. “Stanley, I can prove I was not lying. Tomorrow you and I can go to Brian’s house, and you can see for yourself what he is making. Stanley excepted that offer and as Stanley was leaving, John thought to himself, Why not go prove the truth to Stanley now? “Hey, Stanley! John shouted as Stanley began to unlock his car door. “Why don’t we go to Brian’s house now?” Stanley thought for a while and decided to agree to John’s offer. He got into the passenger seat and let John drive, because he did not know where Brian worked.
Once the two colleagues got to the old building, John realized he has rarely visited this part of town.
“John, are you sure this is where your friend is? This place does not look safe.” Stanley was slightly nervous. This part of town was very run-down and dirty. It was not a nice place for anyone to visit. John entered the tenement and as the door squeaked, he once again heard the noise of a rat. He chuckled, thinking his mind was playing games on him. As the pair approached the lab table, John gasped. None of the equipment that was previously there was on the table.
“NO!” John screamed. He was in awe. Then he realized that Brian probably just took everything home with him. “All right, Stanley, I know this looks bad. I know it looks like I was lying, but I was not! Brian probably just took his work home with him. Come on, lets go to his house to prove I was not lying.” Stanley agreed and they left.
“John, you do not have to do this. I believe you, I guess. You would not do this unless you were telling the truth.” Stanley believed that John was being honest. Why else would he care so much to find it? John said that he did not mind going to Brian’s house so they continued onward. Once they arrived at Brian’s house, they rang the door bell. There was no answer. John decided to call him on his cell phone. Brian answered but he seemed extremely unhappy.
“John what do you want, I’m busy?” “Stanley, where are you? I need to prove to my boss that I had a good reason to miss work.” John was curious where else Brian could be with his experiment.
“John, I think it is going to be difficult for you to get your point across.” Stanley said worryingly.
“And why is that?” John asked impatiently.
“Because the chemicals…. are lost..”
John’s mouth hung open.
