Wow…secret agent guy’s tribal council behavior in the first episode make it hard to top, but the second episode of Survivor Redemption Island does just that – and leads this writer to believe that Survivor Redemption Island may be the best installment in years if not the best ever. Can’t wait to see what happens on Redemption Island? Interested in who heats things up with a sho-mance? What happens when country boy Ralph and evil Russell mix it up?
The first scenes this week show Francesca arriving at Redemption Island. The night is pitch black…I mean middle-of-the-woods-at-midnight black. Remember when Stephanie was the last person left on her tribe and she had to spend a few nights by herself? This is worse.
Rob gives a brief intro and says he’s satisfied with his tribe. Rob does think the secret agent guy is a little crazy. Does anyone else think Rob is actually reading this intro? The words sound scripted and Rob’s voice is stiff.
(Break for Old Spice commercial – old spice will take us into the sweet waters of friendship and trust?)
Now, CBS plays a mean trick on us. Viewers along with his tribe members are enjoying a good laugh as secret agent guy Phillip stalks a spider. Phillip is very dramatic, as though he was tracking an elk. And Phillip is wearing nothing but his tight red briefs. As we’re laughing, the cameras cut to secret agent guy talking about his feelings when Francesca maligned his character during last week’s tribal council. Phillip tears up and shares that he considers his character a reflection of his love for this country, having worn the uniform and having been willing to make the ultimate sacrifice. He eventually does kill the spider with a stone.
Meanwhile, On Russell’s Tribe
Russell and his buddy Stephanie are on an all-out search for the hidden immunity idol. And, if you’re a Survivor fan, you know Russell seems to attract hidden immunity idols like a magnet. Russell seems to dig around the roots of every tree and look up in the branches. He’s crawling and he’s stretching.
Then country boy Ralph turns over a rock. And there lies the hidden immunity idol.
And At Boston Rob’s Tribe
We have our first sho-mance: Matt and Andrea. This concerns Boston Rob, who had considered both part of his alliance. Who knows the danger of a Survivor sho-mance more than Boston Rob? He tells his carefully chosen alliance partner, Natalie. Together, they decide Matt will have to go soon.
Presumably to make room for the Redemption Island challenge, the reward challenge and the immunity challenge are now combined into one challenge. This has happened before…but I think in past shows the combined challenge started after the merge.
This challenge is a relay that uses all of your Survivor skills. Players swim out to a platform, break a tile and grabs the key released then swim back. Eventually, the keys open a box with rubber balls that are used to break flat plates.
After the keys are back and a box opened, Ralph and Phillip (secret agent guy) are head-to-head throwing balls to break tiles. At first, Ralph seems to take the lead in this part of the Immunity Challenge. Then he misses several tries which allows secret agent guy to catch up. The suspense kills me, but eventually Ralph breaks the last tile.
After the Immunity Idol Challenge
Matt makes the seemingly innocent gesture of shaking hands with members of the other tribe after the immunity challenge is over. Boston Rob literally loses it over this and considers it the most un-Survivor behavior. Boston Rob says he can’t believe that someone would congratulate a team that has beat them badly two times in a row. At this point in episode 2 of Survivor Redemption Island, I predict Matt will be seeing Francesca soon.
(Note to Amazing Race fans, CBS promos that the first episode of Amazing Race will air again Sunday night in case you missed it. Then we get to see one of those cute California cow commercials…no, this one’s for Chik Fil A. Sorry for the confusion.)
After that commercial break, Russell and tribe carry their bounty home. Russell is taking care to preserve the hidden immunity idol clue. Russell believes he has retrieved the clue from the basket of fishing supplies unnoticed. Like any good country boy, Ralph catches this. Word spreads pretty quickly. I don’t know how many people know that Ralph already has the immunity idol, but the tribe is very upset about the sneak pulled by Russell.
Ralph confronts Russell, who denies having it. He says he doesn’t like “how you’re coming at me.” Both Russell and Ralph then state that they know how to play this game. Oh, Ralph winks and says “I’ll play his game. I’ll show him how smart I am.”
Of course, Russell gets very upset. I hope Ralph hasn’t cursed himself.
On Redemption Island
We get another quick look at Redemption Island, which is unremarkable as far as Survivor sets. There’s a beach. Francesca writes in her journal, her luxury island. Yes, that’s a strange choice for a luxury item but who am I to judge. She wonders who her next neighbor will be and hopes it’s not secret agent guy. She’s afraid she might be stuck with the new islander for several days.
And on Boston Rob’s Tribe
Secret agent guy decides to hold a post-immunity challenge meeting like he did last week. He apologizes for losing the challenge.
Boston Rob, though, is more upset at Matt, playing the Christian game, the social game on day 5. In preparation for Tribal Council, Kristina puts on her immunity idol necklace and says she does plan to use the hidden immunity idol tonight.
Boston Rob calls his crew together. He wants to get rid of Matt. But some of his alliance want to vote for someone else. They decide that four of them will vote for Matt. Another good quote from Boston Robb: “He’s playing Survivor and he’s playing textbook. But he’s playing with me.”
Boston Rob then gives Phillip some much-needed tutoring on tribal council behavior. They set up a system where Boston Rob will indicate to secret agent guy who to vote for during tribal council. Secret agent guy will use his acting skills to make others think he knows he’s going home…risky move?
Talk is much more reasonable this time and the tribe (and Phillip) seem resigned to sending Phillip to join his nemesis, Francesca, on Redemption Island. Then comes the vote and the first blind-side of the season. Matt is sent packing. Matt is caught completely off-guard and says “Wow. Good job, guys.”
Jeff teases us with a few clips of the next episode. Boston Rob will learn that no one has more fury than a sho-mance partner scorned – meaning Andrea. And Russell’s tribe learns what happens when you cross Russell.
Then the show ends. We’re left with Matt walking onto Redemption Island. We don’t see or have a reference to a challenge tonight. So what’s up? Will the group on Redemption Island become a third tribe? Will we see the challenges or just hear the results?
