Summary of first game (VII)
The No-Name Defense made a name for itself (don’t ask how that makes sense) and cemented the ’72 Dolphins as the only team in League history to finish undefeated and untied, winning 14-7 over the Redskins. The Dolphins D allowed no points and the Redskins only points came on special teams (explanation later). The defense was so respected that safety Jake Scott was named MVP.
Summary of second game (XVII)
The Redskins scored all 17 points in the second half and gained a measure of revenge by defeating the Dolphins 27-17 after falling to them in Southern California 10 seasons earlier. With 166 yards, John Riggins took home Super Bowl MVP honors.
Summary of third game (XVIII)
Marcus Allen was named MVP after rushing for 191 yards and 2 TD’s as the heavy underdog Raiders stunned the Redskins 38-9 on “Black Sunday.”
Summary of fourth game (XXII)
The Redskins scored 35 unanswered second quarter points and roared back from a 10-0 first quarter deficit to defeat Denver 42-10. With 340 yards and 4 TD’s, Doug Williams became the first black quarterback to win the Super Bowl as a starter.
Summary of fifth game (XXVI)
The Redskins jumped to a 24-0 lead and cruised to a 37-24 win over the Bills. Mark Rypien ripped the Buffalo defense for 292 yards passing and 2 TD’s and was named the MVP.
My favorite Redskins SB moment
I’m not old enough to remember any of them but the Redskins score in VII off of a field goal gone wrong is a classic blooper-reel highlight.
