Stefano Langone is a singer and piano player who is competing on the 10th season of American Idol. According to JoesPlaceBlog, he has made the Top 40. The rumors for how Idol works this year is that the Top 40 would be cut to the Top 20 by the judges and producers. The contestants are then supposedly moving to the first voting round as a Top 20. So there is a good shot that Stefano may make the voting rounds on AI.
Assuming that Stefano does make it, there are some big positives and negatives that could affect his chances of winning the show. On the positive side, Langone is quite a soulful singer. It can also be a big plus that he plays an instrument rather well. Although guitar players have won recently instead of piano players (Kris Allen did also play the piano), Idol voters have taken quite a liking overall to the instrument players since instruments were introduced in Season 7.
Soulful singers also tend to do well on American Idol because they tend to make good live singers. Someone like Katy Perry can do well in the music industry because of her image. There is plenty of room for “fun” songs like California Girls that do not require much singing talent. But live singing relies more on an emotional connection with a song. No one is ever going to win simply coming out and singing “fun” songs every week. So this is another big plus for Stefano Langone.
Besides his soulfulness and instrument-playing abilities, Stefano does have a good effective range. In other words, he can hit the high notes well and go up and down the scale with reasonable precision. Range is not a huge plus on Idol, as musicality and perceived marketability seem to be getting the votes these days. But Stefano already has the musicality. His perceived marketability is still a big question mark, as his videos do not focus much on his personality. But he seems to have a good presence and some charisma.
On the negative side, Stefano does not seem to fit the mold of singers that are getting the big votes and winning the show during its history. He is more like a Stevie Wonder singer (no, not necessarily better, but there are similarities), and these types have literally never won on American Idol. Now, this is just a preliminary observation because Stefano certainly seems to have some versatility in his voice. But it remains to be seen how well he can navigate the different genre challenges thrown at AI contestants.
One other possible negative is Stefano’s volume control. While his runs are great, he tends to sing too loudly when it is not necessary. This causes him to lose his best vocal tone at times. However, this is certainly something that Stefano can probably improve upon.
In short, it appears that Stefano has a good deal of raw singing and musical skills. He is a very soulful and emotional singer, which is a huge plus. His piano skills are also a bonus. But Langone will likely have to set history by becoming the first singer of his type to win. That is a tall order and somewhat unlikely to happen with the current voting trends. Therefore, Stefano Langone has low odds of winning the 10th season of American Idol.
