Affiliate marketing involves promoting products or services for another business as an affiliate. Affiliate marketers earn a commission on each sale that they generate for the partner business. Affiliate marketing can be quite profitable for the entrepreneur in the right niche.
Affiliate marketers use blogs and other websites to attract traffic – both from search engines and regular readers. The affiliate marketer may also develop an opt-in e-mail list from blog or website readers. Once traffic to the site or membership to the e-mail list has been developed the affiliate marketer can promote products or services in exchange for a commission.
Time, hard work, and a long-term commitment are required to become successful in Internet affiliate marketing. It takes time and dedication to build a high-traffic, authority blog, website or e-mail list. Instant success is not likely to happen in affiliate marketing any more than it is likely in any other business. Affiliate marketing does offer the opportunity to earn a considerable amount of money though.
Trust is an essential component of affiliate marketing success. Your readers are far more likely to purchase a product or service that you promote if they trust you. Readers who have come to respect you and your opinion will purchase recommended products and services much more readily that readers who do have not developed that same trust.
An affiliate marketing business is a perfect home-based business. This business requires only a computer, an Internet connection, and perhaps a bank account or PayPal account to receive payments.
Marketing the selected affiliate products is accomplished through a website, blog or e-mail list. Building a high-traffic, authority site or list is beyond the scope of this chapter, but Yaro Starak (Entrepreneurs Journey) and Darren Rowse (ProBlogger) both maintain excellent blogs on this topic.
There is no shortcut to success in the affiliate marketing business. Unfortunately, there is also no shortage of Internet marketers promising instant riches to anyone who follows their secret system – in exchange for a tidy sum of money. Building a successful affiliate marketing business will take time, commitment, and hard work.
An affiliate marketing business is only as good as the reputation of the affiliate marketer. Be careful to only promote products or services that you are proud to have your name associated with – both now and several years from now. Promoting questionable products and services can tarnish your reputation for many years.
Starting a home-based, affiliate marketing business can be a perfect business opportunity for the entrepreneur who enjoys working online.
