St. Patrick’s Day Craft: Lucky Leprechaun House

by tree pony

Symbols commonly associated with St. Patrick’s Day are leprechauns, pot of gold, four-leaf clovers, and lucky horseshoes. A well-known tradition that surrounds St. Patrick’s Day is to wear green for good luck. You can boost the luck in your home or office area by displaying a handmade Lucky Leprechaun House. Below is a creative tutorial for this lucky craft.

Materials

Wooden bird house
Hot glue gun
Acrylic paint (green, white, yellow, black)
Paint Brush
Newspaper
Fake coins
Small wooden objects (horseshoes, four-leaf clover, etc)

Optional Materials

Acrylic paint in rainbow colors
Polymer clay

Directions

Step One – Cover your work area with newspaper. Paint the wooden bird house green to represent a lucky leprechaun house. The base color is up to you but sticking with traditional St. Patty colors will give the house a lucky feel. Different hues of green and yellow or gold would be great options. After the paint dries, you may want to paint a second coat before moving on to the next step.

Step Two – Lay out the assortment of craft supplies around the house before you begin gluing them onto the bird house. On the side of the bird house, paint a small, black pot. You will fill the pot by gluing the fake coins on top of the black pot. If you do not have any fake coins, you can paint some gold coins above the black pot.

* To add some color to your lucky house, paint a rainbow on the side of the roof going towards the pot of gold. Lightly trace a rainbow outline with a pencil and paint the rainbow in different colors, such as red, orange, blue and purple.

Step Three – When all of your painting has dried completely, you can begin to glue any other wooden craft pieces that you have, like a small horseshoe, four-leaf clover or even stars.

Extra Tips

If you prefer painting over gluing objects onto the bird house, you can easily draw a light outline of horseshoes, stars and four-leaf clovers all around the bird house. Use a thinner paint brush to get more detail when painting these symbols.

Mold a small leprechaun out of polymer clay. Follow the instructions on the polymer clay package when creating the leprechaun. When it is complete, you can hot glue him onto the bird house. If a leprechaun seems too difficult, sculpt his green top hat and glue next to the pot of gold.
