The Sports Illustrated swimsuit 2011 issue is almost out. Yet the suspense over the Sports Illustrated swimsuit 2011 cover girl was settled a few days early on David Letterman. It has now become a tradition for the cover girl to be revealed on Late Night, along with the first look at the issue itself. The 10 finalists showed up to do Letterman’s top 10 before the winner saw herself on a giant Times Square billboard. This time around, the cover stands to turn Irina Shayk into a household name.
Following the top 10 bit, the models waited backstage to see the cover displayed on Times Square. According to Shayk, none of them knew what the results were until the unveiling, which ultimately displayed the 25-year-old Russian.
Being the Sports Illustrated swimsuit model was a coveted honor. Many careers have taken off from headlining this issue, as the likes of Kathy Ireland, Elle MacPherson, Heidi Klum and Tyra Banks made it in the past. In fact, the new issue comes out just after last year’s cover girl, Brooklyn Decker, made her film debut with Adam Sandler, Jennifer Aniston and Nicole Kidman.
Decker still had time to appear inside the issue, albeit not in front. In addition, veterans like Jessica White, Anne V, Julie Henderson and Jessica Gomes are coming back to the beaches. Shayk has been in every issue since 2007, but this is her breakout edition.
Before winning the Sports Illustrated swimsuit race, Shayk was best known for being linked to soccer star Cristiano Ronaldo. She literally came from nowhere, according to world maps, since her Russian village of Yemanzhelinsk is not on most maps at all. Yet Shayk is the first Russian from any village to make the cover.
The actual photo has Shayk on her knees at the beach, with a typically revealing pink and yellow bikini. She isn’t the only girl on the cover, however, as a smaller image of Kate Upton is seen to the right. But although she is dubbed “Kate The Great,” she may not have been great enough for the starring role.
Although the main image from the swimsuit issue is now out, readers will still flock to newsstands this week to see the rest. According to the cover, Shayk’s other pictures begin on page 192, though they have a high bar to climb over.
