I don’t think you need an article to tell you how to spend quality time with your kids. You already know how to do that. It’s your family, your time. Quality time won’t be just the same for any two families. However, there are a few simple tips to keep in mind when making time for quality time so to speak.
-Always devote the time entirely to the activity you are doing. Whether that activity is playing a game, talking or just watching a movie quality time isn’t quality time if you are distracted by other things. Turn off your cell phone, turn off your lap top and your pager when it comes to quality time you and your children should be all there is. Too many families have been swallowed by the digital age, when you are texting dinner is done, something is wrong.
-Which leads me to another tip, eat together not beside each other, a dinner table that you use and a television that you don’t during dinner is a huge step toward quality, quality time.
-Conversation is one of the best uses of time you will ever find. Looking back on my childhood it was not the carnivals they took me too, or the games we played, or anything else I remember most. It was the conversations we had, the knowledge and memories they cared enough to share with me. Talk to your family.
-Don’t always assume quality time has to be an activity or even something you consider fun time. Quality time is just that, time. You can have quality time while cleaning the gutters, doing home work or driving twenty hours for a Christmas party. It doesn’t have to be a planned out event or special day though those are nice too. In that case see the next tip.
-Make a schedule. Before I had a family I never scheduled anything, and I think if I didn’t now I’d never see my family. A family is a group of individuals that all have lives, demands and needs of their own, you can’t expect them all to just line up for time that involves the whole family.
-Pay attention to the individuals. Just as important as planning so the entire family can do some thing together you should make time for one on one activity with each member of the family as a parent and a spouse.
Over all the trick to spending quality time with your children, and your family is to follow your heart, not your day planner and never forget that while everything else in life may seem so important right now, your children really will be important forever
