Every holiday season, my husband and I escape the hustle and bustle of city life and plan a quick jaunt to Southeastern Wisconsin. Less than two hours from our home in the Chicago suburbs, we can embrace magical Midwestern Christmas traditions in a countryside setting. Some of our favorite Wisconsin-based holiday activities include the following:
The Grand Geneva Hotel
This full service sprawling resort boasts Christmas in the Country featuring a dazzling holiday light display, a family friendly fun-filled musical, spectacular snow sculptures constructed by one of America’s top sculpting teams and a prestigious presentation of handcrafted candy gingerbread houses. Every Saturday in the month of December, guests are invited to sing along with house favorite Tom Stanfield who combines Christmas carols with a collection of merry instruments. And holiday teas are a daily occurrence at the Grand Geneva from 1:30 to 3:30. The hotel also advertises skiing, sledding, skating and s’mores!
The Cove of Lake Geneva
One of my very favorite downtown Lake Geneva hotels, the Cove is a fabulous summer retreat, but also lures Midwesterners back in the winter months. The resort even presents a New Year’s Eve celebration called The Event, highlighted by a 70s theme complete with live entertainment, open bar, appetizers, a four course dinner, party favors and even in-house babysitting services. There is also a dance competition and a costume contest for the best 70s attire! The Event at the Cove of Lake Geneva costs $125 per person but accommodations are extra.
The Abbey Resort
The newly renovated Abbey Resort in Fontana, Wisconsin hosts both office and family holiday parties. They also advertise Home for the Holidays, a musical presentation delivering everlasting Christmas memories for the whole family. A New Year’s Eve extravaganza in the Fontana Grill costs just $99 per person and includes an open bar, four course dinner, live entertainment and more. Or you can bring the kids along for a New Year’s Eve children’s affair featuring a pizza dinner, dessert making event, scavenger hunt, pool party, Wii tournament, game night and much more.
When the holidays are all wrapped up, the Lake Geneva, Wisconsin area continues to celebrate the season with their Winter Fest event, which normally takes place the first weekend in February and features the United States National Snow Sculpting Competition. Participants from all over the country compete in this impressive contest along the lake shore while spectators cast votes for their very favorites.
