We live in an age of the multi functioning gadget. Most phones now have built in mp3 players and Ipod’s have apps so why would you want a separate mp 3 player? In short, the sound. Sony has a reputation for top quality products so does the Sony series X with OLED display live up to this?
You have a number of buttons to access music by using the touch screen. The interface helps you get straight to the music and is very intuitive. The touch screen sensitivity is fantastic and is one of the best on the market. The mp3 player also has quick access buttons which gives it a boost over the competition. The Sony X has three dedicated buttons on the top of the player. You have play/pause, plus a button each for rewind and fast forward/skip track. You also get a volume control on the right hand side and a sliding hold button which disables the other buttons. These physical buttons are great if you want to be able to skip tracks without having to look at the screen.
The Sony X series has a good weight and feels solid in your hands. Your finger glides smoothly along the 3 inch OLED screen which takes up two thirds of the front surface. In terms of the look of it, each person has an opinion on this but I personally like it a lot.
As with all mp3 players on the market, it does come with extras. They include a WIFI connectivity, web browser, Slacker Radio (US only) and a youtube application, which is unexpectedly good. The browser is not up to the quality of Ipod’s but this isn’t what you buy the Sony Walkman X for.
I’ve saved the best bit of the Sony X player until last. The sound will blow you away! It’s clean and crisp with a warmth to it. The supplied headphones are superb and the noise cancellation function is a great addition. These headphones will suit most users, unless you’re an audio snob. OK, now it is time to mention the biggest down side. This is the most expensive player on the market. However, the headphones are worth $50 alone so that’s worth considering.
The Good:
Great Sound Quality. One of the best on the market
Great OLED screen & intuitive user interface.
Physical buttons with volume control.
Solid Design
Great headphones with noise cancelling feature
The Bad:
Video & podcast support weak. Web browser basic.
Summary:
The Sony Walkman X was created to play music, so if it’s amazing sound from an mp3 player you are after, then this is for you. Click here for a more informative review on the Sony X-1000 mp3 player at my mini web page.
