Have you always wanted to view movies on the go? Sure, you have devices such as iPods around that allow you to do that. However, iPod screens are typically small and won’t look too good when displaying videos. The same goes for other media players that are of similar size. Therefore, the device that you have to look at is a Portable Video Player.
One such Portable Video Player, or PVP for short, is the Sonic Impact Video 55. It is a PVP unit from a brand called Sonic. Most likely you have never heard of this brand. Don’t worry, I haven’t either. The Sonic Impact Video 55 is a black colored device. It looks just about the same as a portable DVD player. The mechanism is the same too: it is a foldable device that can be folded and neatly tucked away in a briefcase or backpack to be carried around. The Sonic Impact Video 55 measures 11.38 x 9.45 x 5.25 inches. That is slightly smaller than a mini laptop. Therefore, it can be easily placed on any surface to be used. The device weighs a mere 2.4lbs, which makes it not only convenient to carry around, but also does not feel too heavy if you choose to place it on your lap when viewing videos.
Of course, the display portion of the device is the most important part. The Sonic Impact Video 55 comes with a large, 7″ LCD display. Beats an iPod or media player screen in terms of size anytime, doesn’t it? However, is it as good as an iPod screen? Definitely. The screen displays crystal clear images and videos. The videos are sharp and nice to look at. The large size of the screen means that you should only play videos that are a little larger than what you normally would put on your media player though. Really small videos don’t look too good when played on the Sonic Impact Video 55. A 640 x 480 pixel video looks awesome though. The screen’s brightness should be kept at a medium level. I think that this level is the best to view videos on the Sonic Impact Video 55. Any higher than that and you would drain the battery very quickly.
If you have an iPod, no worries: you don’t have to get rid of it. Instead, you can use the iPod together with the Sonic Impact Video 55. How? The device supports iPod linking. You can view your favorite movies directly from your iPod without the need to transfer any files. However, from what I have been told, the Sonic Impact Video 55 only supports the iPod classic types and not one of the Nano or other types. You can listen to audio files using headphones. The audio quality is excellent. Audio quality is comparable to that of a good MP3 player. The Sonic Impact Video 55 is very easy to use and comes with minimal amount of controls. It has a battery life of 4 hours. When tested, the battery seemed to last slightly longer than that. However, the battery takes literally ages to charge. It took almost 5 hours for the Sonic Impact Video 55 to be fully charged. That makes it quite inefficient.
Apart from the low battery life, the Sonic Impact Video 55 is an alright PVP actually. It delivers good video as well as audio and comes with a large screen that has a great display quality. It is quite affordable too at around USD200. It would make a great gift for the holidays.
