So, Umm, Like, You’re Famous for Being Famous?

The debate started over a pizza. It ended with two people getting up and leaving. The subject? It wasn’t intentional and it is something that we usually avoided. Somehow we ended up talking about reality shows; my personal take is that 98% of them are useless and scripted. Yes. Gene Simmons, that means you. Shows like The Osborne’s, Viva La Bam, Family Jewels and even Jersey Shore aren’t really “reality shows”. Sure, at some point in time I am sure that there was some element of realism to them but eventually it gets stale and things get scripted. People are told things in ‘confidence’ knowing someone is going to blurt out and start a fight; even more insulting to the human race are the obvious scripted replies of the cast. While I openly admit I enjoyed a couple seasons of the above mentioned shows I lost interest in them when every episode had some big dramatic moment that was conveniently remedied in 18 minutes.

Then there are the Kardashians of the “ Keeping Up With The Kardashians” show. When did this happen? I know that there are spoiled little brats like Paris Hilton and Nicole Ritchie that milked their family name and were only in the spotlight because of their blood tie but the Kardashian clan take this to a whole new level. Calling them mediawhores is an understatement but really, peel back the first couple layers and what do you have? Nothing. They don’t do anything but show up, put their hand out and collect a check for a public appearance. Oh, a trendy clothing store doesn’t count. I’m not jealous, not in the least. I just fail to see how thousands of people hang on their every word and flock to them at social sites like Twitter. I wish I could get paid to Tweet. Oh, you didn’t know about that? If there is a penny to be made you can bet one of the Kardashian females will be there with bells on.

Pop stars, actors, writers and even producers actually do something to warrant their fame. The social pariah like Perez Hilton create their own media frenzy when their popularity dips. That’s nothing new, celebrity scandals always seem to happen when they fall of the trending topics or don’t make it on the front page of a magazine for six months. I was stunned to read some of the prices that the Kardashians were charging for showing up at an event, endorsing a product or Tweeting something. I was never a fan of Bruce Jenner but he willingly stays in the mouth of madness with his wife and step-children. Creating a reality show around them is just repulsive. I wonder how long it will take before Khloe starts Tweeting about her husbands, Lamar Odom, infidelity (cough Lara Manoukian cough). If you start dating someone that is already in a relationship can you really expect them to be faithful? What makes all of this an even worse situation is the females that look up to these “women”. They aren’t role models, they are trolls that take the term “gold digger” to a whole never level.
