Sometimes the simplest embellishment can dress a gift up in the most amazing way. If you are short on time, cash, or materials, easy felt wine and present tags are the craft to make. They instantly add a festive touch to your gifts, making use of materials you already have on hand.
This craft is a great way to keep little hands busy, too. Have your children help create the tags to add their personal touch to holiday gifts. Your recipient will treasure the tags!
Easy felt wine and present tags also make terrific ornaments. After the gift recipient unwraps their present or finishes their bottle of wine, the tags are ready to slip on the branches of their Christmas tree.
Easy Holiday Felt Wine and Present Tags
8 x 10 Felt Squares (choose complimentary colors to suit the holiday occasion)
Felt Marker or Pencil
Craft Glue (substitute: needle and thread or needle and yarn)
Ribbon or Yarn
Optional: Buttons, Gems, Small Die Cut Shapes, and other Embellishments
Choose a felt color for the base of your tag. Sketch a tag shape onto the felt using a felt marker or pencil. At the top of the tag, sketch a 2 inch long by ½ inch wide tag flap. When you cut the tag out, this flap will be cut out as part of the tag to provide a seamless look (see illustration.)
Choose a felt color for the design embellishment of your tag. The color should be complimentary to the tag color, but also a contrasting color in order for the object to stand out from the base tag.
Ideas: Christmas tree, snowflake, present package, snowman, heart, star, wine bottle, gingerbread man, teddy bear, party hat, alphabet characters, numerals, Santa Claus, stork, rattle, and any other “symbolic” shapes that might be appropriate for the gift-giving occasion.
Cut out the felt shapes. Be sure to include the tag flap as part of your tag cut-out, not as a separate piece.
Bend tag flap over and secure with glue. The flap should now form a loop (see illustration.) If you do not have glue on hand, use a needle and thread to secure the flap loop.
Glue cut out embellishment shape onto the base of the tag. Again, if you do not have glue handy, or if you would like a “stitched” look, secure the shape onto the felt tag base with needle and thread (or yarn.)
Add additional embellishments as desired. Pictured is a simple button shape added to the tag design. Many items can be used to spruce up the design, such as small die-cuts, rick-rack, yarn, gems, and beads. Be creative and use this as an opportunity to use up your craft scraps.
Cut a piece of ribbon (or yarn) in the appropriate length to tie around the neck of a wine bottle or to attach to your wrapped gift. Thread ribbon through the looped tag flap and secure to present.
