She walked slowly out of the airplane walkway toward her future. Aware of the butterflies in her stomach, she knew that months of anticipation will reach their climax in mere seconds when she sees him for the first time. Anxiety of wondering if she is going to be pleasing to his eyes churns in her stomach mixed with the adrenaline rush of excitement. She longs to finally touch he who she has come to love very much.
She made sure she was close to the last of the passengers to get off of the plane. Mostly because she needed the time to muster her courage. She was so hoping that he would see her for who she is and all the potential that lies within her, and that all of those words they said to each other would still mean something now that they were about to be face-to-face. She also took quiet pleasure in building his excitement by delaying her presence, knowing that he would be waiting for her at the gate. A brief smile formed at that playful thought, and gave her what strength she had, to stand up and exit the plane.
She held her breath and gave a quick silent prayer of thanks for everything God had given her up to this point. She emerged from the tunnel into the airport, her heart pounding. Trying to be as calm and confident as she possibly could, she casually looked around scanning the other travelers for him. He wasn’t there. At first, relief of the awkward build-up of anticipation expelled with her first deep exhale. Then panic. What if he didn’t make it? With her purse in her hand, she slowly walked along, following the other passengers toward the baggage claim area. Still scanning the people in the airport for him, she tried to look as uninterested and cool as she could. It was a violent lie to what she was feeling inside. She ached for so long to be with him, and now the agony was yet again prolonged.
If she was a wreck inside, she certainly was doing a good job of hiding it. She dressed impeccably- as a young career professional would in the cold winter. High-heeled black boots complemented her black business suit which fit her just right. The matching black trench coat was a stylish addition and contrasted her long, blonde hair nicely. Nails professionally manicured, make-up just right, and hair curled. She was there to make an impression on him.
The walk to baggage claim was therapeutic for her because she had the chance to relax and calm her nerves. Passing others by, she felt very confident and great about herself. The long months dragged on, but she really made the most out of it by getting in shape and accomplishing several of her personal goals. She felt she still had some work to do, but even she couldn’t deny how far she had come and how attractive she saw herself today. With those thoughts empowering her, she halfway strutted down the corridor of the airport. Men walked by taking double glances at her. None of this was new to her, as she was used to this. Her strategy for that was to enjoy the silent attention with her peripheral vision, but not to give them direct eye contact. She wasn’t interested in leading them on, just absorbing the compliment of their gazes.
The baggage claim area was busy with other passengers standing around talking and waiting for their bags. She could only think about him, and wonder what he would think of her. This was the final question left to answer before they could move forward. She caught herself in a daze starring at the floor; wrapped in these and many other thoughts when she had a sudden feeling she was being watched. Slowly, she lifted her head and turned to her left. There he stood across the way, leaning relaxed against one of the large supporting columns. He was grinning broadly, his arms crossed in front of him simply watching her. She could feel her cheeks burning from the sudden rush of blood flow to them, and she tried to recall if she had done anything within the past few minutes that made her look like a complete dork. Those feelings soon passed though, as she realized that she couldn’t take her eyes off of him, and she noticed that the smile he was wearing appeared to be sincere with genuine pleasure.
Suddenly, she felt like a shy little school girl, excited, awkward and happy all at once. He was so handsome, and everything she pictured he would be. She was so stunned by being caught off-guard by him that all she could do was stand there. He seemed to understand what she was feeling. He thought it was cute that, despite her best efforts to maintain her composure, he could see the shy little girl inside. His confidence had to be enough for them both at that moment, or else she feared she’d just faint. He made his way over to her, taking his time just long enough to make her pleasantly uncomfortable with the wait, yet allowing his senses to further absorb her into him. She was so beautiful. He was very pleased.
He stopped just short of invading her personal space and neither said a word. He was so confident and self-assured of who he was and what belonged to him. She was in a trance staring into his eyes and completely incapable of moving. Slowly and methodically with the same beautiful grin still on his face, he cupped her face in his hands, licked his lips slightly and leaned in toward her, giving her a slow, lingering kiss. Her body instantly responded to his touch. She closed her eyes, feeling relaxed and at home. Her body followed, gently pressing against his and allowing him to envelop her both body and soul.
As he pulled back slowly, all of the sounds of life continuing on around them became clearer again. She reconnected with his gaze feeling renewed strength and indescribable happiness. He grabbed both of her arms softly and quietly whispered her name as he embraced her. Her smile now matched his own. They shared a joyful laugh at the thought of the long-awaited end to a journey that transformed them together into a whole new beginning of another. There was a mutual understanding in each other’s eyes that conveyed to both of them that everything was going to be okay from now on.
Amidst the bustling of the airport’s activity- its life no different from any other day- two souls found each other in the quieted space that exists between the paradox of reality and surrealism. It wasn’t difficult. There was no effort involved. They just knew.
