Iris waited until they got to the next flight of stairs to follow them up. When she caught up to them they stopped on the second floor. Iris stayed close to the wall. She peaked around the corner to see where they went. To her surprise they stopped at a nearby room. The man knocked on the door lightly. “Open the door! It’s us!” The man whispered as he looked around suspiciously. The woman beside him seemed very impatient. “We don’t have all day!” The woman sneered. “Calm down, Camille! They know it’s us! They’ll let us in. They’re just acting childish.”
Suddenly the door opened and they disappeared inside. When they vanished from sight, Iris crept up to the door to get a look at the room number. She wanted to remember it just in case James wanted to check things out. Iris knelt down in front of the door and peaked through the keyhole. There were two other men in the room besides the man she called Ansel. Iris noticed that one of them had a thick Irish brogue. It was just like the one James heard in the alley last night. “Come on, Camille, take off that wig let’s see who you really are, I already know you’re a man, woman do not grow.” Iris saw the woman called Camille pacing back and forth. She looked disgusted. Suddenly the woman started yelling at the other two men. Their voices were muffled, but Iris could make out what they were saying. She tried to get a better look at the screaming woman, but as her eyes adjusted to the small keyhole. “I told you it was a mistake hiring them! They couldn’t kill a small rabbit, much less a detective!” He hollered. “What are you getting so hot about? Take that stupid wig off, Camille, and cool down. Do you see any constables hanging around here?” Ansel inquired. “No, but you never can whose listening and who shouldn’t be.” She wasn’t paying enough attention to notice that when she stood up she hit the back of her head off of the doorknob. Iris tried to keep quiet, but it was too late. Unfortunately for Iris she completely missed Camille’s big reveal, but she most certainly did hear Iris knocking her head into the doorknob shake when Iris hit it. She became suspicious. “Did you hear that? I think someone’s outside!” Camille remarked. “It’s just your imagination! There’s no one there!” Ansel replied. “Do you know that for sure?” He asked arrogantly. Ansel became angry. He got up off the bed and stomped over to the door. He threw the door open.
When he saw Iris kneeling by the door he tried to play it cool. Iris put her hands to the floor and pretended to look for an earring. She looked up at him innocently. “That darn earring! I keep dropping it everywhere!” Iris claimed. “Who are you?” Ansel asked suspiciously. Iris feared for her life. She slowly got up off the floor. She backed away slowly as he came closer.
“I said, who are you?” He became more angry by the minute. Before he could grab her, Iris ran off down the hallway. “Don’t just stand there! Go get her!” Ansel ordered. The two men ran from the hotel room and went off down the hall after Iris. “We can’t let her get away! She’ll go to the police!” He shouted. “She’ll never get there alive!” Ansel replied smugly.
