Is the sex-for-sale industry a harmless industry? Television news and NY Daily News newspaper among others has recently spotlighted four particular murder incidents police believe were done by a Craigslist serial killer. Remains of four young females were found on Gilgo Beach in Long Island, New York.
Craigslist is an online classifieds site where you can list, sell and buy items. Craigslist until recently also offered a sex-for-sale listing. They pulled the sex-for-sale listing after another recent murderer, Philip Markoff, was arrested after seeking Craigslist prostitutes for his victims. His secrets died with him when he committed suicide while in jail August 15th, 2010.
In the Long Island Gilgo Beach serial murder case, four women victims had advertised themselves on Craigslist under the sex-for-sale listings, offering their services as prostitutes. They were identified and their names announced on January 24th, 2011. Suffolk County police believe the killer, unfortunately still at large, particularly sought out these sex-for-hire females.
The sex-for-sale industry is nothing new in our culture, or for that matter other cultures, since almost the beginning of history. Men are willing to pay for sex and women offer sex for sale. I believe men cultivated this sexual industry but without females willing to degrade themselves by offering their bodies for sale, the sex-for-sale industry probably wouldn’t continue. I spoke to several men on this topic and they believe the sex-for-hire industry will always continue, along with pornography.
Many women and young girls are involved in the sex-for-sale industry because of years of abuse, drug or alcohol addictions, or being forced into it. Sex slavery still continues in the United States and around the world. Some women elect to be in the sex-for-sale industry because of their own personal reasons or the amount of money it offers. Some women turn to it because it pays much more than a secretary’s weekly salary. Sex-for-sale also includes the booming pornography industry, now more rampant due to the use of computers.
Prostitutes and escorts place themselves in danger by just being in the sex-for-sale industry. Every time they elect to meet a stranger, the situations an open door to danger. High end escort services are available, but these women are no less placing their lives in danger meeting clients than any prostitute standing on the streets. Underage girls and boys are brutally victimized by eager men, sometimes making overseas trips for this particular sex-for-hire.
I personally do not understand the mindset of a woman willing to place herself in the sex-for-sale industry with all the open risks, both physically and mentally. The sex-for-sale industry has destroyed endless relationships and marriages. Pornography addiction has also destroyed relationships. The need for men to indulge their sexual habits by degrading women for their own satisfaction is something I don’t understand either.
What are we teaching our young boys and girls with overly rampant displays of sexual imagery? How do we get young men to respect women, other than viewing them as sex objects? How do we raise young women to respect their bodies and themselves? And more importantly are we encouraging increased sexual violence and rapes against women and children due to the sex-for-hire industry? There will always be depraved criminals in our world, but women placing themselves in dangerous sex-for-hire practices have to be halted before there are more serial sex crimes. Police do patrol computers and the streets for illegal sex-for-hire practices but they are too numerous to shut all of them down. Who should be responsible for violence in sex-for-hire industries?
