Who doesn’t love pasta? I know I do! Italian food is my all time favorite, and I use many tipes of pasta in my cooking. However, when my husband developed both high cholesterol and diverticulosis I had to make some changes.
The Ronzoni Healthy Harvest have helped us to eat healthier without sacrificing the pasta that we love, and it can help you too. My box of Ronzoni Healthy Choice Whole Wheat Blend Pasta Penne Rigate comes in a 13.25 ounce box, and claims to be an excellent source of fiber. The box also bears the seal of the American Heart Association, meeting their criteria for saturated fat and cholesterol for healthy people over age 2.
Last, the product promises both great taste and nutrition. There is a small clear window on the box so you can see what the pasta looks like, and it indeed does look like a whole wheat colored pasta. The picture of the cooked pasta meal on the box looks much lighter, almost as if it were not a whole wheat food product.
Cooking Ronzoni Healthy Choice Whole Wheat Blend Pasta Penne Rigate is as easy as cooking any other pasta. You bring 4 quarts of water to a boil, add pasta and cook for 12-14 minutes uncovered. One serving equals 2 ounces of dry pasta, and I had to do some calculating to know how many cups this was. Depending on how long you cook your pasta makes a difference as well, since the longer it cooks the more water it absorbs. Two ounces is roughly 2/3 of a cup of dry pasta, and this equals about one cup cooked pasta.
Ingredients read: Semolina (wheat), wheat bran, wheat fiber, niacin, iron, thiamin, mononitrate, riboflavin, and folic acid. So the “whole wheat” portion of this pasta blend is coming from the wheat bran and wheat fiber, which are removed from white flour. This is the healthy part of the grain.
I had a particular recipe in mind when purchasing this, and it’s one of my husbands favorites. I mix cooked pasta with spaghetti sauce, freshly sauteed mushrooms, onions and zucchini, and add it to a casserole dish. I cover the top with grated cheese and bake until hot and bubbly. Delicious with this pasta, and the Ronzoni Healthy Choice Whole Wheat Blend Pasta Penne Rigate is light and tasty enough that I don’t notice I am eating healthier!
One serving provides these daily allowances: 10% iron, 14% riboflavin, 35% thiamin, 20% niacin, and 30% folic acid. When comparing this box of Ronzoni Healthy Choice Whole Wheat Blend Pasta Penne Rigate with Ronzoni Penne Rigate (not whole wheat blend), there are some nutritional differences. The whole wheat blend contains 30 less calories per serving, 1 gram less sugar, one gram less protein, and 4 grams more fiber. The whole wheat blend also contains higher amounts of important nutrients. Clearly there is a reason to fit a whole wheat product into our daily diets, and Ronzoni lets me do it without sacrificing any flavor!
There is a good recipe on the back of the box for Penne Rigate With Chicken, using this pasta, olive oil, yellow peppers, onions, garlic, pasta sauce, grilled chicken breasts, basil and parsley. Be sure to check the back of the box for other great recipes from Ronzoni.
