There is little doubt that Ron Erwin is one of the more recognizable faces in Joplin, MO and hearing his name in connection to a series of murders is shocking. If you have spent any time in the businesses which he owns you have likely seen him and because of that hearing the rumors about him hits closer to home. Whether you have ever talked to him or not it can feel as if you know Ron Erwin, often without knowing anything about him besides the fact that he has long hair and owns a couple of businesses. Now you can add that he is a ‘person of interest’ in a series of murders in Albuquerque, New Mexico, but what does this mean?
What is the Case Ron Erwin is a ‘Person of Interest’ in?
Called the West Mesa Murders what is known is that parts of 12 woman’s bodies were found in a remote area of Albuquerque, New Mexico. It appears that the adult women were prostitutes and the murderer is a serial killer. Ron Erwin was named as a ‘Person of Interest’ and searched multiple properties. The police made it clear that Ron Erwin was one of a number of ‘persons of interest.’ but little else.
His property was searched but beyond that nothing has happened.
What Does Being a ‘Person of Interest’ mean?
In general a ‘Person of Interest’ is modern police language for someone who is being investigated but has not been arrested or accused of a crime. This has no actual legal meaning and because of that assuming anything about any case based on this is very dangerous.
The searches of his home along with the statement of being a person of interest certainly implies that there is some suspicion of Ron. All the police have said is that someone called in a tip. In a case as important to the city of Albuquerque as this one they are not going to ignore anything or take any chances. What this means is that there is no reason to assume anything except that someone somewhere noticed him, something that is easy to do.
One can only hope that this case is cleared up quickly not only for the sake of the victims and their families, but also for the family and friends of Ron Erwin and even Ron himself because whether he is completely innocent or guilty this is going to be a blot on his reputation, and likely one that is undeserved. Until that time the general lack of information is the only thing that is known well enough to state clearly.
