Our dog is a Silky Terrier, and at the age of 11 she is a pound or two over weight. My husband loves to reward her with treats when she is obedient, and we are continually disagreeing about how much he feeds her. While perusing the dog treat aisle at PetSmart I found a good compromise.
For only $3.99 I picked up a container of Nature’s Recipe Training Treats. These come in a tall 7 ounce jar that looks much like the containers that I buy spices in. The cap screws off, but you also have the option of lifting up one half of the cap to pour out a treat or two.
Nature’s Recipe Training Treats are distributed by Nature’s Recipe Pet Foods, which is a division of Del Monte Foods. The container is filled with miniature pork chop shaped pieces of dog treats, colored brown with white streaks running through them. They are only 5/8″ in length and are about 3/16″ thick. The container says these are “Soft & Chewy”, and they are indeed a soft textured treat.
The label does not say how many treats this 7 ounce container holds, but I dumped out what looked like half of the container and counted 105 treats, so I think it is safe to say there are around 200 treats in this canister, which is a lot of training treats for less than four dollars.
If you show your dog and reward your pet treats during his performance, you know that you don’t want to give him a crunchy treat, and that is where these Nature’s Recipe Training Treats would really come in handy. They are soft enough that a dog eats them up very quickly, and without any crunching sounds!
Nature’s Recipe Training Treats remind me a lot of Canine Carry-Outs, which are also made by Del Monte. My dog loves those as well. The Nature’s Recipe Training Treats would be a good choice if you are training your dog to obey commands, or simply teaching him to do tricks. They contain 12% crude protein, 7% crude fat, 3% crude fiber, 30% moisture, 1% – 1.50% calcium.
We have gotten into the habit of giving our dog a small treat at bed time, but I didn’t like the noise that some of those treat bags make. My husband is often asleep by the time I come to bed, and opening up those bags sometimes wakes him up. I love that these Nature’s Recipe Training Treats can be removed by screwing off the cap or flipping up one half of the cap, and it makes no sound.
Aside from all the factors that would make me want to purchase these again is the simple fact that my dog, who is a very fussy eater, loves them! She gives them her approval right along with mine.
