I recently purchased an iPad 2 and the Apple Digital AV Adapter was one of the first accessories that I knew I just had to have. Here is a review of the adapter.
The Apple Digital AV Adapter allows you to display your movies, eBooks, photos, slides, or pretty much anything on your iPad, iPod Touch, or iPhone’s screen onto your HDTV – or anything else that supports HDMI input. Apple’s Digital AV Adapter is a replacement for the old Apple AV Connection Kits that came in both component and composite variants and unlike the Apple AV Connection Kits, this adapter allows for full 1080p [instead of maxing out at 480p], transfers both excellent audio and video in one cable, and mirrors whatever is on your iOS device’s screen directly to your HDTV – instead of needing AV output support for each app.
For just $39, I had to buy the Apple Digital AV Adapter along with my iPad 2 and seeing how I love to stream videos on my Apple tablet; I know that this accessory would come in handy. Unfortunately, the adapter doesn’t come bundled with an HDMI cable, but assuming that you already have an HDMI cable (I did,) setting up this accessory is extremely easy. The Apple Digital AV Adapter plugs directly into your iOS device’s 30-pin data cable port and has two connecting ports – allowing HDMI output and added support for a 30-pin cable as well so that you can charge while you use the accessory.
When I fired up my HDTV and began using the Apple Digital AV Adapter with my HDTV, I noticed a few good and bad things about the Adapter. I loved how the AV Adapter mirrored everything on my iPad 2’s screen, how vibrant the colors were, and there was no sign of lag or latency between my iPad 2 and my 50 inch HDTV, but GarageBand crashed the first time I ran it – and it didn’t port out the audio, just the video – and I didn’t like how the adapter didn’t support full-screen output – the edges were black in horizontal mode and in vertical mode, the iPad 2 only took up 1/3 of my HDTVs Display.
I would love to see how well the Apple Digital AV Adapter worked with hardcore games like Infinity Blade and the future iPad 2 games to come, but so far, I’m thoroughly impressed with the quality and speed of the Apple Digital AV Adapter – it’s a must buy.
