Keeping up with the Joneses is hard to do in Minneapolis, Minnesota. That is one clever family! Burger Jones was the restaurant where some of my family members chose to dine last night; lucky for me I was along for the ride and the food.
Burger Jones is in a burger niche all to itself, so much so that it is hard to describe. When we drove up we saw a retro sign on the building with a truck stop slogan, but when we entered the restaurant the idea of a typical truck stop disappeared to be replaced with a sleek dining area that had an upscale urban feel to it.
When I saw the TVs in the corner the words “sports bar” came to mind, and when I noticed that there was a bar mostly shielded by a partial wall from the dining area I was thinking “cocktails lounge.” By the time we were seated at a table near a wall of windows I was wondering to myself – “What in the heck is this place, anyway?”
I enjoyed figuring it out because Burger Jones is an interesting restaurant in every sense of the word.
The TVs were on and tuned to a football game, but not the sound; the dining area was pleasantly quiet. Every once in awhile there would be the sound of cheering emanating from the bar area, indicating that sports lovers that had congregated in that area of the restaurant were enjoying the game. Burger Jones is not a typical sports bar or cocktail lounge, but it is evident that these elements of the restaurant are popular with their customers.
By reading the menu you quickly see that Burger Jones has redefined a burger joint by first creating a fun, urban atmosphere and then by taking the hamburger and other sandwich items on their menu above and beyond what is served in a typical burger/malt/shake shop.
Some examples of unique items
Starters: Royal Mounted Bacon Poutine (hand-cut fries smothered with rich beef gravy, chopped bacon & cheese curds); Macho Nachos (large baking tray of corn tortillas, spicy taco meat, refried beans, Chonny Cheese Sauce, pico de gallo, lettuce, pickled jalapenos, sour cream and Suthers Salsa) and Furious Beer Cheese Soup (traditional beer cheese soup with Minnesota made Surly Furious).
On the side: Tri-Fry Tasting Tower (hand-cut russet fries, maple-bacon sweet potato fries and parmesan waffle fries with choice of dipping sauces).
Specialty burgers: Black & Bleu (cracked black pepper, caramelized onions, Amablu Bleu Cheese); White Trash Burger (chicken-fried bacon, fried cheese curds, and plenty of Velveeta) and The Hangover (bacon, cheddar, hot sauce and a fried egg).
Malts and shakes such as Twixie Tweat, Salted Caramel and Rice Krispie Treat, and a variety of hard shakes.
Napkins are soft cotton dish towels, just the right size for a lap; burgers are served on cookie trays; malts and shakes are served in old-fashioned glasses with the mixer container also brought to the table.
I thoroughly enjoyed the Tri-Fry Tasting Tower, and the winner for tastiest hamburger among those consumed at my table was the White Trash Burger.
Meat Your Maker
Burger Jones has a contest that people can enter called the “Meat Your Maker” challenge. You win a “Meat Your Maker” t-shirt and bragging rights; there have been only three who have completed the challenge to date. The record holder finished in 6 minutes and 39 seconds, and then he had a shake.
The “Meat your Maker” sandwich contains 10,000 calories and costs $35.00 according to the flyer in the restaurant:
