President Obama has been a busy man during this so called “Lame Duck Congress”. I like to think of Obama as the team owner and Nancy Pelosi as the coach of the “Mighty Duck Congress”. Pelosi assisted by her assistant coach, Harry Reid have helped the “Mighty Ducks” paddle through history making legislation pass despite the efforts of John Boehner and his protege’, Rep. Mike Rogers of Michigan’s 8th Congressional District.
Obama sent an e-mail out to supporters this month where they could click on their district to see how his administration’s policies have helped each Congressional District. I clicked on Mike Rogers 8th Congressional District since he represents me,( I live in the 8th Congressional District of Michigan).
I was delighted to see the hundreds of people helped by Obama’s new policies despite the efforts of both Boehner and Rogers to stop this from happening. This is what I found out by reading the e-mail:
4,700- education jobs were saved in the State of Michigan because Democrats passed a deficit-neutral-state-aid bill.
106,000- jobs were created in Michigan due to the Recovery Act. Great news for a state that was hit hard by problems that the big 3, auto makers have gone through.
250,000 middle-class Michiganders received a tax cut. It is hard to believe, but we still do have a middle-class here in Michigan to receive those tax cuts!
15,100- small businesses are eligible for health care credits under the affordable care act.
8,100- Michiganders who have pre-existing illnesses will no longer be denied medical coverage by health insurance companies. I am one of the 8,100 who will benefit from this legislation that Rep. Rogers tried to block.
119 -Is the magic number of Energy Recovery Act projects that are being implemented in Michigan to help secure our energy future.
The passing of the National Alzheimer’s Project Act will help my mother who is now in the early stages of this dreaded disease and the other millions of Americans who experience it.
My daughter will be helped by the extension of unemployment benefits along with many other thousands of Michiganders who can not find a job in our state’s troubled economy. The fact that she can now stay on our health insurance until she is 26, is also comforting.
My military family is also proud of the fact that a travesty to the dignity of our soldiers has been taken away with the repeal of “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell”, notoriously known as DADT. We can all breathe a bit easier with the Start treaty being put back into place-a treaty that George H. Bush and Colin Powell stated we needed.
Americans can not blame all Republicans for being obstructionists as a few did cross the aisle and thought about what was morally right instead of politically correct. We had a few Democrats who obstructed passage of key legislation and a few surprises from Independent Joe Lieberman.
Michigan voters are better today because of the efforts of the “Mighty Duck Congress” and need to remember in 2012 who helped them and who were obstructionists on both sides of the aisles.
U.S. Budget Office was cited in the Obama e-mail as sources for statistics.
