These days everyone is bound to have some old movie DVDs lying around their house collection dust. Whether it’s a movie that you’re just not interested in, or a DVD that somehow ended up scratched and damaged, you can still find a way to recycle it. One of the easiest ways to recycle old DVDs is by turning them into a holiday ornaments.
This is a very easy craft project that all ages can take part in. Best of all, it allows you to start recycling any DVDs or Cd’s that you have lying around, regardless of the condition that they’re in.
Recycling DVDs into Ornaments: What You Need
Markers or crayons
Recycling DVDs into Ornaments: Step One
The first step in recycling your disks into ornaments is to decide what you would like your ornaments to be. In my example above, I decided to turn my DVDs into snowman ornaments for a Christmas tree. I’ve also seen Santa, reindeer, and snowflake ornaments too. You’re only limited by your imagination and creativity.
Recycling DVDs into Ornaments: Step Two
Once you decide what type of ornaments your DVDs are going to be, flip over the disk so the shiny side is face down. Cut a piece of a yarn that is a few inches long and form a lope with it. Tape this loop to the back of your DVD. This is how the your recycled ornaments will hang from your Christmas tree.
Recycling DVDs into Ornaments: Step Three
Once your yarn is in place, flip your DVDs back over so the shiny side is face up. Now you can begin to decorate your ornaments. For my snowman, I cut out a hat shape from a black sheet of construction paper and glued that on top of the recycled DVD. I then cut out several circles from the same sheet of paper to make the snowman’s eyes and mouth. To make the snowman’s nose, I took a small piece of orange paper and taped it into a funnel shape. I placed the funnel over the recycled DVDs hole and taped it in place. This became the snowman’s nose.
Recycling DVDs into Ornaments: Step Four
Once you have the basics of your recycled DVD ornaments, it’s time to add a little more detail to make the ornaments special. For my snowman, I drew a candy cane and glued that on his hat. I also added white specks for his eyes.
If you choice to do a Santa ornament, you can glue cotton balls for his beard. If you’d rather create a reindeer ornament, you can use red paper for Rudolph’s nose, then color it in glitter. Or, if you’d prefer, you can use a red pompom. The possibilities are only as endless as your creativity is.
Recycling DVDs into Ornaments: Step Five
The final step in recycling these disks are to show them off. You can hang them from holiday trees, doors, hooks, even on the walls to make a quick and fun decoration. In this particular example, I used a snowman to be hung on a Christmas tree, but you could just as easily make a Halloween decoration, or any other holiday, by altering the character you create.
