I really try to do everything in my power to be fit, maintain my weight, and improve my health. Recently I purchased a Blue Fitness Stepper, and an Omron Go/Smart pocket pedometer to achieve that goal. I had $20 to spend at sears.com and decided that a good set of resistance bands was the next thing on my list.
The individual bands worked out to be more expensive than purchasing the set of ProSource Fitness Resistance Bands. I purchased 5 for $25.95 + S. & H. It took about 10 days from ordering to receiving them. I have now had them for 2 weeks.
The first thing I liked about them is that they all have handles, and you don’t have to swap or move anything.
What I didn’t like is the fact that they don’t have the strength or estimated pounds of resistance on them. This is taken from the one sheet manual that came with it.
“Yellow: 2-5 lbs. Extra Light.
Green: 5-8 lbs. Light.
Red: 8-12 lbs. Medium.
Blue: 12-16 lbs. Heavy.
Black: 16-20 lbs. Extra Heavy.”
Before I even opened them, my husband Len who is 77 years old, had the red one out of it’s bag, and had done a workout with it. The following morning he was in such pain, with his shoulders, and kept holding them. I wasn’t aware that he had used them, and when he told me, I was so annoyed with him. He hasn’t used resistance bands in a long time, and didn’t check to see what strength they were. He just picked one up and started using it.
So I started off with the yellow one, even though I do walking, aerobics, swimming, jogging, etc. There was no way I was going to suffer with pain.
I did 10 squats, 10 lunges, 10 standing bicep curls, and 10 lateral rows. In the one page manual it has an exercise guide, and these are 4 of the 6 exercises I could do this the band. When it came to doing the alternate lying chest presses, the band was too long for me, and when I lifted my arm up it didn’t stretch the band at all. I had to hold the band part of the way up the rubber tubing to achieve some resistance. This also happened with the triceps extensions. Later on I wrapped the band around my hand at each end, and this seemed to work better.
I did this 4 days during the first week, and I didn’t feel any pain, or pulling. So then I increased each of the exercises to 20. I managed to do these 5 times during last week.
Today I figured that I would try the green band, and I did 15 of each of the 4 exercises. I really didn’t notice a great deal of difference from the 2-5 lbs compared to the 5-8 lbs. I will continue this during this week, and then increase the amount up to 20 or even 25 depending on how comfortable I feel doing them. If at anytime I felt pain I would stop, and decrease the amount of exercise, or go back a color.
Although the bands haven’t had a lot of use yet, they seem well made. I will not be using the 2 heaviest ones in the near future, or possibly not at all. The only problem I could see for someone who needs more resistance than these give, would be the fact that you cannot use 2 together. Some bands have clips so that they can be stacked together.
This packaging also includes a door anchor, and I finally found it in the bag that had the green resistance band. It is a black strap with a small round piece of metal sewn in the end of it. There are no instructions for it, so I have emailed the company as to how I should use it. I am assuming that it goes over the top of the door, because when I tried it under the door, it just came through to the room I was in. I do know that there is a gap at the bottom of the door I wanted to use. As of yet they haven’t got back to me.
On the back page of the manual they have a service guarantee, 100% satisfaction guarantee, and a quality guarantee. None of them have details in the manual.
They also have warnings about wrapping resistance bands around your body, consult a physician before starting regular exercise, and children should have adult supervision when using these bands.
So for my limited workout these ProSource Fitness resistance bands will be fine. I am 62 years old, am 5 feet 6 inches tall, weigh 127 lbs, and have curves in the right places. I just want to keep my figure, and I know that these bands will help me to do that.
