Here’s how scrubbing my tub used to always go for me…wait all week for a day my son actually takes his nap, rush into the bathroom and throw Comet all over everything, don rubber gloves and open up windows for ventilation, then hurriedly scrub it all off and rinse rinse rinse until I’m satisfied it’s all gone before my son wakes up and tries to play in the bathtub. I’ve never trusted the nasty cleaners and know all too well just how toxic bleach and other chemicals used in cleaners are, and I know just how easily my son can jump right in the middle of things when I’m trying to clean and rub his eyes or stick his hands in his mouth with the stuff all over his hands. Not a pretty thought.
Now I’m doing something completely different. My mom has been using Shaklee cleaners since I was little but after I moved out of the house I went to whatever was cheap and readily available…big mistake considering my skin and lungs are very sensitive and I generally opt not to clean at all instead of subjecting myself to the harsh cleaners that will leave my throat raw and my arms breaking out in rashes. I finally got back to Shaklee a relatively short while ago and was a bit surprised at all the changes; the company changed hands since I’d last kept track and they’d added a ton of products including Get Clean Scour Off, one of the products recently featured on Oprah’s My Favorite Things show.
Scour Off is a brownish paste that is biodegradable and made of all-natural ingredients (corn and coconut surfactants) and is sold in 9oz containers for about $8.00 each. Now this may sound a little steep for 9oz but it takes very little of the paste to get the job done and I’ve been using mine for the last three months at least three times a week and it’s only half-gone. It’s recommended to keep the stuff away from eyes but I can scrub without gloves with this stuff and never had a problem (which is quite a feat with my picky skin).
What is it good for? I mainly use Scour Off for my stovetop and bathtub…it works great on soap scum, baked-on food, grease, and all sorts of other unpleasant forms of gunk. This product is also recommended for cleaning the oven without having to use the really strong cleaners, I haven’t used it for that purpose yet as my oven stays fairly clean but judging how it works on the stove top I’m pretty optimistic for its performance when I do use it inside the oven.
As for the soap scum…I’ve tried all sorts of bathroom cleaners trying to find something that didn’t irritate my skin or bother my lungs and had never succeeded in finding something that worked until Scour Off. My bathtub gets disgusting very fast…I have a two-year-old son, a mechanically-inclined other half, and the occasional dog that uses that bathtub aside from myself so that ring comes back on a daily basis (for future reference, never buy a house that doesn’t have a shower) and requires near-constant scrubbing. In the past I’ve just had to let it build up because I couldn’t take those strong chemicals that often.
About the only potentially negative side of this product is the availability…it has to be purchased directly through a Shaklee distributor. Luckily if you don’t know a distributor you can do a search for one on Shaklee.net to either deal with a distributor in your area in person or order through their distributor website.
Overall this product pans out to about the same price as Comet (a little less if you don’t have to use tons of it like I do) and has yet to cause any problems…and I don’t have to open the windows in the middle of winter to clean the bathroom!
