I Hate Jill Zarin Portrait of a Housewife ‘” Lisa Vanderpump December 7, 2010
The Beverly Hills Housewives was one of the most anticipated in the Housewives series, we had a genuine star in Kim Richards and a genuine star’s wife, Camille Grammer and even the child star’s sister who did some acting herself, Kyle Richards but most of us have never heard of Lisa Vanderpump.
Lisa is arguably the most popular of all the Beverly Hills Housewives and she could possibly surpass all of the housewives if given the time and attention. Little was known about Lisa prior to her signing onto Bravo’s Real Housewives series and suddenly everyone wanted to know everything about her and her life wasn’t her own anymore.
Lisa had fame and fortune in her own inner circle but fans of the Housewives were about to emerge into her tight circle, the test that makes or breaks every woman who is thrown into this reality television madness.
I can’t think of any housewife who has handled this better than Lisa Vanderpump. Her life was already full, busy and exciting yet she jumped in with both feet and joined Twitter, Facebook and immediately began to communicate with fans. Her favorite pooch has a twitter name and a blog on Bravotv.com, Lisa has appeared on Watch What Happens Live twice and was a real joy to watch on the show.
Like all of the Beverly Hills Housewives, Lisa didn’t agree to do the show for money, she certainly doesn’t need it and isn’t really promoting anything. Her restaurant, Villa Blanca in Beverly Hills is featured on the show occasionally and is mentioned on her web site but this was a very successful restaurant before Housewives came along and was already frequented by celebrities, for those of us who don’t live anywhere near Lisa’s restaurant, being on Housewives isn’t helping her restaurant business but it doesn’t need to, that’s not what this is about for Lisa. Lisa and her husband, Ken also own and operate a high end night club/restaurant called Sur in Los Angeles.
Lisa’s nickname is Pinky, she’s been married for 28 years and has a son and a daughter. All of the usual cliché’s apply to this woman, she’s got it all, she’s living the dream, she’s keeping it real and she’s the epitome of style and class. She is the peacemaker and never has an ill word to say about anyone. She’s gracious to everyone from her children to the doorman to insane housewives.
If I could say one negative thing about Lisa, it would be her unnatural permanent appendage called Giggy, her hairless Pomeranian dog whom she carries with her everywhere she goes. To the restaurant, on an airplane, dinner parties and charity events, Giggy is under Lisa’s arm at all times. I have nothing against dogs, in fact, I love dogs and Giggy is adorable but there is a time and place for dogs’ presence and a high end dinner party in a mansion in Beverly Hills is not an appropriate place to bring a dog along. In addition to that, when Lisa isn’t holding the little dog she pawns Giggy off on her husband and he looks absolutely ridiculous with that little hairless dog under his arm. There are times that you just have to leave the dogs at home with the house manager.
Lisa was an actress in a former life, she did commercials and even produced a movie in 2007. Her television resume reads like a “I’ve never heard of that” list of second rate garbage television from the 70’s and 80’s, there’s a reason why no one had heard of Lisa or her acting gig’s. But that’s not why we love her! Clearly acting wasn’t her calling as she’s done a much better job at decorating dozens of restaurants, homes and hotels over the years with her incredible style. Lisa likes clean lines and bright colors, she uses a lot of white with the most amazing accessories and huge floral arrangements everywhere you look. Her style is class all the way.
Her wardrobe and accessories along with her flawless skin and make up just breathe grace and elegance.
If Lisa were to have a character flaw it might just be the fact that she’s too kind. Her houseguest Cedric seems to be a taker who gives little back but Ms. Vanderpump continues to allow him to live in her home rent free. To his credit he does act as Lisa’s personal trainer and seems to accompany her on errands and visits to her restaurant as she checks up on everything and attends to all of the details.
Cedric also provides Lisa with her comic relief as he tends to be the subject of many of Lisa’s practical jokes but I’m sure Lisa could find a lot less expensive form of entertainment.
If you haven’t ever watched The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, Lisa is reason enough to follow the show, she’s truly inspirational in that on top of everything else that she has going on in her life, she devotes a good portion to charity.
In May of this year Villa Blanca hosted a fashion show and luncheon for the Children’s Burn Foundation. The Children’s Burn Foundation is a California-based nonprofit organization dedicated to preventing burns and fires and providing services to those who have been affected by a burn injury. Over $20,000 was raised at this event.
Quietly Lisa feeds the homeless every week at her restaurant Villa Blanca and plans to bring her bald dog to the children’s cancer ward at the hospital in hopes that it will give children who have lost their hair a bit of a pick-me-up to see Giggy the hairless dog and to make them laugh a bit. Lisa doesn’t announce her charity work in hopes of getting praise (Kelly Bensimon and your 2 boxes of cereal) but she does it for the right reasons and in the right way.
So is this woman for real? She’s too good to be true, isn’t she? Lisa Vanderpump is real and she’s well on her way to becoming one of the most popular housewives in Bravo’s history. Lisa is funny like Bethenny, has style and grace like Alex, she is kind and sweet to everyone like Sonja and has absolutely none of the bad qualities of Jill Zarin or Kelly Bensimon.
Thank you for joining me through this portrait of a Housewife — until next time.
