While growing up in Hawaii on the island of Oahu, we were fortunate to have access to many mom and pop bakery/pastry shops around the island. As large big box stores entered with their own bakeries, grocery stores expanded their bakeries, and the economy changed – some of our favorite spots like Craig’s Bakery in Kailua sadly closed its doors at the end of 2001, after 50 years of service to the community.
Here are some of the local favorites that are still going strong and we hope they will remain for several more decades to share sweet treats to the people of Hawaii and its visitors.
Popular Bakeries in Honolulu, Hawaii
Dee Lite Bakery – 1930 Dillingham Blvd., Honolulu 808-847-5396
This bakery is best known for its chiffon cakes, my favorite the guava cake, there’s nothing like it anywhere.
Liliha Bakery – 515 North Kuakini Street, Honolulu 808-531-1651
Best known for its Coco Puffs – a delicate cream puff filled with chocolate crème filling and topped with butter icing. There’s a coffee shop attached to the bakery and both are open 24 hours a day.
Leonard’s is a mix of Portuguese and other ethnic baked goods. They are primarily known for their malasadas – a light, flakey, Portuguese style donut that’s served sugar coated or filled with custard, chocolate, or haupia and dusted with cinnamon or white sugar. The main bakery is located at 933 Kapahulu Ave, up from Waikiki. However, there are many red and white striped wagons around the island – parked in parking lots as an extension of the bakery, known as Leonard Jr’s Malasadas.
Napolean’s Bakery in Zippy’s Restaurants
Best known for their Apple Napples, sugar free pies and cakes, and many other goodies – most Napolean bakeries are open the same hours as Zippy’s restaurants (24 hours). The convenience of Zippy’s in every major town on Oahu makes it easy to purchase pies, cakes, and pastry snacks at any time of the day – or take home while you’re buying Zippy’s famous chili – yummy!
Popular Bakeries in Windward, Oahu
Agnes’ Portuguese Bake Shop – www.agnesbakeshop.com 46 Hoolai Street, Kailua, HI 96734
Kaneohe Bakery – 45-1026 Kamehameha Hwy, Kaneohe, HI 96744
Awesome local stop for cakes, pies, and pastries – you can still order cakes that are hand decorated or pies for holiday parties. Go early in the day for the best choices, add a cup a coffee and enjoy.
Ted’s Bakery – 59-024 Kamehameha Hwy, Haleiwa, HI
Ted’s pies are famous not only in their bakery but in grocery stores across the island. You’ll be sure to find these pies in Foodland, Safeway, Star Market, Times Supermarket, and other stores where they have a cold refrigerator section.
