A set of these whimsical magnets makes a fun housewarming gift. Use them to inspire a child going away to college, or a friend who is far away, or even just as a way to liven up your own kitchen.
Tan, yellow and white polymer clay
You can write your own fortunes or just type up fortunes you have read before. You can get ideas from newspaper horoscopes, famous sayings, poetry, or anywhere that inspires you. Type up the fortunes you like and print them out so that each saying or fortune fits onto a strip of paper 2 ½ in. x ½ in. You should print about 12 fortunes. Cut all the fortunes out and set them aside. Roll out 2-3 strips of white clay just slightly larger than the fortunes you printed and cut. Curl the short edges just slightly. Take a printed fortune you particularly like and gently press it onto a clay strip, hiding the edges by rubbing clay over them. Place each fortune on a foil covered baking sheet and bake according to package directions.
Add a small amount of yellow to some of the tan clay. Mix it up, but don’t bother trying to make the color uniform. Real cookies are not uniform in color, nor do they have smooth edges, so keep this in mind if you want realistic looking fortune cookies. Roll out several 2 inch x 1/8 inch circles of the clay. Roll bits of aluminum foil into small balls ½ inch in diameter or less. Place 2 of these balls onto each circle, 1 to either side of the middle. Gently fold the top of the circle over so that it covers the bottom of the circle and the edges meet. Do not press the edges together. If the edges become sealed, you will need to pry them apart at least in one area, prior to baking, so that you will be able to insert a fortune. Next, bend the corners of the semi-circle you made toward each other, to form the familiar fortune cookie shape. Repeat this for all the circles. If you like, cut one circle in half to simulate a couple of “opened” cookies. Place each “cookie” onto a baking sheet covered in foil and bake according to package directions.
Once the cookies and clay fortunes are baked and cooled, insert paper fortunes into the cookies. You can secure these with a bit of glue, or leave them unglued so that they can be changed periodically. Use glue to adhere magnets to the backs of each cookie and each clay fortune.
