Hugh Hefner girlfriend Crystal Harris accepted the Playboy founder’s marriage proposal over Christmas. So what about that 60-year age difference? Would she still say “I do” if he wasn’t super-wealthy but instead lived in a third-story walk-up with a pet canary?
Hugh Hefner Engaged
On Christmas Day afternoon, Hugh Hefner found the time to tweet his engagement to Crystal Harris to all those who also spent time on Twitter rather than with friends and family.
Harris is no Johnny-come-lately but has earned her keep since the beginning of 2009, when she joined the Shannon twins, who were already acting as “girlfriends” to the Playboy founder.
The NY Daily News reported back in 2009 that she entered Hefner’s harem with the philosophy that “it is better to have loved and lost, than to never have loved at all.”
May-December Romance or Sugar Daddy?
With Hefner engaged, one cannot help but notice the 60-year age difference between the Playboy founder and Harris. A May-December relationship to be sure, it is also possible that Hefner acts as sugar daddy or merely looks to Harris as his soon-to-be trophy wife. Then again, Hef has very little need for a trophy of anything.
Another Oona O’Neill?
It is quite possible that for Harris it is indeed love. Consider the marriage of Charles Chaplin and Oona O’Neill, which took place when she was 18 and he 54. A&E explains that O’Neill met Chaplin through her acting endeavors, and plenty of detractors (her father included) did not predict the match to last.
Remembering Chaplin’s history of unsuccessful marriages to younger women, it would have stood to reason that a divorce was inevitable. Yet in spite of the 36-year age difference, the Chaplins made their marriage work.
… or another Anna Nicole Smith?
While the Chaplins appeared to have enjoyed a harmonious married life, Playboy’s 1993 Playmate of the Year Anna Nicole Smith does not seem to have lived in marital bliss with James Howard Marshall II.
When he – at the age of 89 – married the 26-year-young Smith, there were plenty of eyebrows being raised. When he died a short 14 months after the nuptials, he had lavished approximately $6 million in gifts on the stripper but failed to write her into his will. The subsequent lawsuits and appeals, as noted by the American Spectator, survive the participants.
Let’s hope that – with Hugh Hefner engaged and Crystal Harris poised to become a Playboy heiress – he remembers to write her into the will.
