The 1985 Universal Studios movie “Out of Africa” starring Meryl Streep and Robert Redford celebrated its 25th anniversary this year by re-releasing the movie on Blu-Ray.
Filmed in Kenya, the movie’s story line focuses on a Danish writer by the name of “Karen Blixen” and her torrid love affair with the handsome adventure seeker, “Denys Finch Hatton.”
One of the premier world travel companies, “Abercrombie and Kent”, also wanted to pay homage and as such, they, in conjunction with private label guide Tony Fenwick-Wilson, created a twelve day Kenya adventure in which participants can relive some of the movie’s most memorable moments.
What follows is a brief description of the “Out of Africa” movie inspired tour as well as a few extras that can be incorporated into the whole experience.
Brief Description of the “Out of Africa” movie Inspired Tour
“Abercrombie and Kent’s 12 day Out of Africa” tour includes visits to several filming locations used in the making of the “Out of Africa” movie.
The first location is the farmhouse and dairy that served as “Karen Blixen’s” home in the movie. The location is part of the “Karen Blixen Museum.”
The “Karen Blixen Museum” contains some of the original and replicated furniture used in the movie such as the dining room set.
Other museum highlights include the safari boots and jodhpurs used by actress Meryl Streep and the Oriental screen that purportedly was part of the inspiration for some of the character “Karen Blixen’s” writings.
The second location is the “Muthaiga Club”, whose interior was re-created for the shooting of the movie’s infamous “Men’s Only” bar scene.
The third location is the “Sanctuary Olonana” located in Masai Mara. The “Sanctuary Olonana” is about as close to where the movie’s funereal scene was filmed as one can get.
While there tour participants will get to recreate the movie’s picnic scene and enjoy a complete al fresco dining experience that includes wine and a mood setting, authentic gramophone playing Mozart in the background.
The fourth location is actually a plane ride aboard a “Waco Bi-Plane” similar to the “Tiger Moth” “Denys Finch Hatton” used to fly “Karen Blixen” high over the African savannah.
The fifth location is actually more of an experience than a location. In the movie “Denys Finch Hatton” sensually washed “Karen Blixen’s” hair, so in tribute to that “Abercrombie and Kent” included a shampoo at the “Sanctuary Oloana Spa.”
Other “Abercrombie and Kent” tour components include camping, wildlife viewing opportunities, a candlelight dinner served in the “African Bush” and an outdoor showing of the “Out of Africa” movie.
Tour Prices and Additional Tour Details
As of 2010 the “Out of Africa” tour price begins at $12,474 per person and can be customized to suit one’s personal preferences.
Additional tour details, including information on how to go about making reservations, can be found on the “Abercrombie and Kent” website.
Would-be travelers should note that all tour components, prices, policies and tour availability are subject to change without advance notice and therefore should be confirmed directly with the “Abercrombie and Kent” staff.
To add to the “Out of Africa” movie inspired experience, one may want to engage in the following activities; purchase the movie on Blu-Ray, read some poems taken from the movie which can be found on the “Karen Blixen” website, watch video and listen to audio clips on the “Destination Hollywood” website, enjoy a few movie inspired cocktails, grab a cup of coffee at the “Karen Blixen Coffee Gardens” and download songs from the “Out of Africa” movie through “AmazonMP3” to make one’s own movie-inspired vacation soundtrack.
