The “awareness ribbon” has long been used to express support for friends and loved ones diagnosed with cancer and other diseases. The pink ribbon was first created in the early 1990s, and has become an internationally recognized symbol of breast cancer awareness. Pink ribbon products are sold with a promise to donate a portion of their sales to breast cancer research and treatments.
The Pink Ribbon Puppies project is a bit different, however. 100% of the proceeds from the sale of the Pink Ribbon Puppies merchandise – which includes calendars, bookmarks and notecards – will be donated to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. No, that’s not a typo – all proceeds of the Pink Ribbon Puppy products will go toward finding a cure for breast cancer.
The charitable Pink Ribbon Puppies project was the result of an unexpected turn of events for a Labrador Retriever breeder and her friend and co-owner. A routine mammogram detected a suspicious mass in July, 2010 and the early stage breast cancer diagnosis was confirmed soon after they bred their yellow lab puppies. Though both women had been looking forward to raising this litter of lab puppies, after the diagnosis they decided that one co-owner should focus on getting well while the other handled the demanding task of raising puppies.
The women started planning the Pink Ribbon Puppies project long before the pups were born. Naturally, the color pink became the predominant theme throughout their house. They bought lots of pink dog toys, lined the puppies’ whelping box with pink fleece, and filled pink vases with an assortment of pink flowers. After the pups were born, they gave each one a pink ribbon to wear and began calling this the “Pink Ribbon” litter.
Pink Ribbon Puppies Calendars
The Pink Ribbon Puppies calendars feature a litter of nine super cute yellow lab puppies born on September 8, 2010. “THINK PINK All Year Long” is printed on each page to serve as a visual reminder of all the women and their loved ones who are battling breast cancer.
A professional photographer, Elizabeth Arellano, donated her time and skills to create the images featured in the Pink Ribbon Puppies calendar. A Southern California company, CANIDAE Natural Pet Foods, contributed towards the printing costs.
The 12×9 wall calendar ($20 each) is a full bleed, professional quality product. Each month features one, two or three yellow lab puppies with pink backgrounds and props, along with out-takes on the side. You can see all of the monthly images on the Pink Ribbon Puppies website, and their Facebook page features lots of cute out-takes too.
The 6×4 mini calendar ($10 each or 3 for $20) is a smaller version of the wall calendar, with the out-takes removed to maximize writing space. The mini calendars are great to tuck into a purse or briefcase, and fit perfectly in a Christmas stocking. Pink Ribbon Puppies Bookmarks
