Books are a great way for children to learn that there are other children dealing with the same issues that they are and a great way for them to learn how to cope with the problems that they have. Many adult books deal with special needs children, but children need children books. After doing some research, I found that there are many picture books available that deal with special needs children and here are some of my favorites.
THE ALPHABET WAR: A STORY ABOUT DYSLEXIA
This book is by Diane Burton Robb and describes how the character, Adam, deals with his inability to read. Adam loves to read, but grows frustrated that he lacks the skills that he needs to read and finally, while in third grade Adam is tested for dyslexia, a learning disability, and finds the help that he needs to learn to read. This books is nice as it talks about how he is frustrated and not just the ones around him who want him to read.
RUSS AND THE FIREHOUSE
This book is one of a series of books written by Janet Elizabeth Rickert dealing with Down’s Syndrome. Russ is a child who has Down’s Syndrome and this book is written about a trip that he takes to the firehouse. Other books in this series are about other adventures that Russ has as a special needs child.
WE GO IN A CIRCLE
A story of an injured racehorse by Peggy Perry Anderson. This horse becomes a therapy horse for special needs children using hippotherapy. Hippotherapy is a form of therapy for children and adults with disabilities that uses the movement of the horse to aid in sensory issues and balance issues in these children. Horses are gentle enough animals that if trained right they are perfect for this type of therapy.
MY BROTHER SAMMY
Autism seems to be affecting many children and they need to know that there are others just like them out there dealing with the same daily issues. This story is told from the eyes of the brother of a child with Autism and how frustrating it can be. However, his brother is in awe of how he is able to learn to play with him. This is a great book for siblings of special needs children as well. In some families, the other child are left out as the daily needs of the autistic child takes over the free time that a parent has. This book is written by Becky Edwards.
MOSES GOES TO A CONCERT
Moses is a child who is deaf and attends school at an all deaf school. When the class goes on a field trip to the symphony, the students hold balloons to help them feel the vibration of the music. This books allow children that even with a disability, the other senses that they have help them to accommodate the disability. This is one in a series of books about Moses written by Isaac Millman.
As you can see, there are many picture books available on this subject and there are books which deal with many different types of learning disabilities and handicaps. I am sure that if you do a search for picture books about learning disabilities or special needs children, you will find many more. I would recommend that you go to your local library and see what they have in there stock as well. Children will enjoy these books and they would be a great opportunity to talk to children that have not had the opportunity to have a friend who has a special need. Children are very willing to make friends with anyone as long as they understand them.
