While Katie Couric is wringing her hands over her imaginary rise of Islamophobia, very real hatred of Christians is rising around the world. In America, it involves making scurrilous movies like Kevin Smith’s “Red State.”
Elsewhere in the world, it involves suicide bombing and murder.
The incomparable Lileks takes note of the upcoming Kevin Smith film, “Red State,” which seems to concern a version of the Westboro Baptist Church doing more horrific things than marching around at the funerals of soldiers and yelling hateful things about gay people.
“Because those craaaazy red states are the places where you’re likely to find fundies, and the Westboro church is just the natural extrapolation of the red-state fundie ideas, right? RED STATE! OOHGABOOGA! Think of it: horror movies often have guys who A) kidnap victims, B) saw off their heads, and C) film it all for their own enjoyment. Oh, if only there really was a group of religious extremists who did these all things – it would give a movie a certain horrible topicality you just don’t get with unkillable bogeymen. But Smith would never do a movie about Al Qaeda in, say, a city in a blue state. No one would produce it; no one would distribute it. But a movie that links the Westboro church to something inherent in the ideological distinction of a “red state” will get you backslaps from all the right-thinking people. It’s lazy. It’s super-lazy.”
Of course someone will make a movie about Zombie Islamo Fascists about the time Osama bin Laden converts to Judaism. It would be pretty cool, though.
Outside of liberal, tolerant Hollywood, hatred of Christians takes a far more bloody turn. Islamic terrorists are going after Iraq’s tiny Christian community. Anti-Christian violence has also erupted in Egypt.
“Egypt was on high alert on Monday ahead of the Coptic Christmas holiday following a New Year’s Day church bombing that killed 21 people, as investigators raced to identify those behind the attack.
“Police cancelled leave for senior officers and were tightening surveillance of airports and ports to prevent suspects from leaving the country, as new checkpoints were set up across the nation.
“Security was also to be beefed up at churches for Christmas which Copts celebrate on January 7, security officials said.”
If I were Katie Couric, I would conclude that the obvious solution would be a Christian version of “The Cosby Show.” The problem is that openly believing people in Hollywood are even more rare than the openly conservative. Such a show, even if distributed in the countries of the Dar es Islam, would certainly not impress the Islamo Fascists, except in ways we do not want.
It may be too much to ask, but perhaps people like Couric might solemnly opine that killing people because of their religion, even if it is Christianity, is-well-wrong. They might even go further and suggest that linking Christianity with the sort of horrors that are going to be depicted in “Red State” is also wrong. It may not stop the violence on the one hand and the bigotry on the other, but Couric and her ilk would seem to be slightly less than hypocrites were they to be appalled at actual hatred and not the imaginary kind.
