Let us reflect on this special day; how we have strayed from God’s path. All newborns are the same, come from the same matter, and welcomed as gifts from God and He sends them to this world that we will treat them fairly; at least not discriminate, indiscriminately! But we have our pet obsessions, see others differently and tend to highlight only the obvious physical attributes. This process attains geometric progression, across families, societies and countries. The common thread of humanity, that should glue us as one, is shattered. The cruel irony is the agenda is hijacked away from the majority, with a miniscule evil setting them, and the former having to run helter-skelter to put out the fires.
By granting special privileges to own children, are we not spoiling them, preventing them to develop the skills to face the world and contribute meaningfully? Those that are left alone, generally develop better empathy and able to contribute to society in a more meaningful way. Those pampered, obviously from the richer families, are now into a dream world, with vultures leading them to a path of ruin. They have multiple avenues to waste their time and wealth and end up in misery, even right in front of their supposed benefactors, own parents mostly.
For the world to come out of most problems that seem to defy solution, we have to start with the basics. We need to highlight the realities that wealth not earned in an equitable manner, has seeds attached to it to cause ruin to the beneficiaries. The very idea of hoarding and denying the rightful share to others more in need triggers an aftermath of disasters.
The big corporations took advantage by seeking fresh pastures based mainly on costs, without much thought over the social consequences. Also the financial tsunami is due to greed over logic, paper profits over real development. Even the very calculation of GDP seems skewed in favor of figures over the benefits that accrue to society and country. With endless comparisons among countries to outdo each other, fairness and compassion has gone out of the window. What use building huge infrastructure, without fair distribution of fruits of success to the society in general? The much used term, inclusive growth, remains a mirage even in communist China, with the Gini coefficient rising, showing that the rich-poor divide is widening.
There is a mad race for pole position, as if it is the be all and end all; we have seen the pernicious effects of such mindless competition in sports, with performance enhancing drugs resorted to, to attain glory, however short-term they prove to be. In personal lives, some are into cosmetic surgery to look different, but what use without feeling comfortable within our surroundings. Are we not revolting against nature by such attitudes that are doomed to failure? Getting well both mentally and physically is welcome but getting obsessed with vanity, with a whole industry thriving around it is just not right!
The threat of destruction of humanity is never far from our minds; but just running around to put out the fires, without attacking the root causes, will come short of real solutions. We have managed to halt at the brink; even now there is a real threat of catastrophe in the Korean peninsula. The stakes are high, with a mad capper in North Korea, with itchy fingers to blow it all! Investing in latest technology and producing even more weapons of mass destruction will only play into the hands of the many evils lurking beneath to hold countries to ransom. We have layers of justice for petty crimes, but none effective to book real culprits, who seem to be above law for so long. We lack the moral fiber to tackle them, with some powerful countries playing dirty games to keep the world in tenterhooks all the time, to serve their selfish interests.
It is time we acted to bury the prejudices, taking the interests of humanity as one. Why perpetrate misery and multiply them with more and more weapon factories? We will be doomed and our luck can run out sooner than we believe possible. What cannot be achieved by might is possible with a gentle touch and love that changes our attitudes. Why be all losers in the end; let us give the future a better world by us acting our moments in God’s way! I believe every day, every moment is precious, but today is more special with so much love and festivities around the world. Let us make them endure; not back to square one, the day after!
