I was hoping that Orajel Oral Pain Reliever Maximum Strength Gel would help alleviate the horrible tooth pain I was experiencing. I tried some other toothache remedies to ease the pain, but they did not take away the pain for very long. I was desperate to try something that would last longer so I could sleep and function normally. Since the label says it is maximum strength, I thought this would be powerful enough. This product would be something that I could keep in my pocket so that I would have it with me at all times, and could apply it as often as needed.
Orajel Maximum Strength Gel is the one in a blue box. On the box it states that it is triple medicated. The main active ingredient is Benzocaine 20%. There are also two additional active ingredients: Benzalkonium chloride .02% and Zinc chloride 1%. These two ingredients are antiseptics.
By the time I bought this, the pain had spread to the entire right side of my mouth. I couldn’t pinpoint which tooth was causing the problem, because it seemed like all of the teeth on that side were hurting, along with my gums. I had been having issues with tooth and gum sensitivity prior to this. At first I thought maybe I was brushing too vigorously on that side with a whitening toothpaste, causing gum irritation. However, the irritation turned into a severe pain, so I knew that it was not caused by my toothpaste.
I get canker sores quite a bit so I thought I could also save this product to relieve the pain of canker sores whenever I get them. It would be nice to have something on hand when I need it. I was glad that this was not very expensive. It was only $2.50, which seems reasonable. The tube is really tiny though. It is only .125 fl oz. With the amount of pain I was in, I figured I would use the small tube up fast.
I noticed that this Orajel contains peppermint oil. I had heard peppermint oil can be useful in easing tooth pain. It certainly does smell like peppermint. I applied the gel directly to the area that was hurting. After a few minutes I realized this product was not helping. The pain felt so much worse! It did not help soothe the pain at all! My gums felt like they were burning.
I have used other oral pain reliever gels and they numbed the area where it was applied so I couldn’t even feel it, but this didn’t do such a good job of numbing. All I could feel was the burning! I can’t even imagine putting this on a canker sore. I cringe when I think about how much it would hurt. I won’t ever use this Orajel again. So basically this did nothing to help me and it made my face start throbbing. Steer clear of this oral pain reliever.
