Neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) nurses provide direct patient care to infants who need special treatment in their first days of life. They may be premature, or sick full-term infants who need ventilators, incubators or surgery. My son was the recipient of their front line care. They handled his breathing issues and my constant tears with skill and compassion.
Present the amazing NICU nurses with gift that shows them how much you appreciate these focused, highly skilled and trained, dedicated individuals. Whether you are a parent or relative of a baby cared for on their floor, their intervention in your baby’s time of need is such a wonderful thing that it is often hard to express your gratitude.
Consider one of these gift ideas for a NICU nurse;
Thank the NICU nurses with a gift that keeps on giving. A rocking chair, or comfortable glider can be donated to the floor for the nurses and parents to use. Have a gold plaque attached and engrave it with the words: “Thank You from (your family or child’s name).”
Send a letter to the director of nursing and the administration of the hospital on behalf of all the NICU nurses. Be as specific as possible, naming the nurses and praising their work. This may be placed in their files and help their nursing career. NICU nurses invest a lot of time and emotional energy into each preemie in their care; cards and photos of the child mean a lot to them. Take the time to write a personal note on stationary, or in an appropriate card.
Gift Basket Ideas
Fill a large basket of goodies for the NICU nurses on the floor. Fill a basket with coffee items–such as mugs, gourmet mixes, an assortment of creamers, candy stirrers, and coffee house gift cards. Mix in chocolate treats or make a fruit basket. Order or make muffins and fill a container with muffins, honey, butter and jams.
NICU nurses have to scrub their hands often, so consider making a basket of skin-care items. Wrap individual bottles of lotion for the nurses to choose and take home, or include a variety of soothing scent-free creams to keep on the floor.
Bring up a box of preemie clothing and diapers, blankets and small toys that you have collected for the nurses to give to parents who are headed home with their tiny infant. If you have been in that situation, then you know how large even the smallest infant outfits are and know how hard it can be to shop. Help the NICU nurses continue to care for their tiny charges and show love to new families by giving them new supplies.Reference
