NFC EAST – Most Overrated Division in Football
By my account, the NFC EAST is the most overrated, over-hyped, division in football. There is one contender in that division, one pretender, and 2 really crappy teams.
The contender is obviously the Giants. That defensive front four is one of the most aggressive, most dominant in the NFL (I believe they’ve taking out six NFL QBs since the season began, I think T. Jackson was the latest). Plus you have Eli, who for all his faults, is a seasoned vet with a championship under his belt and a proven track record in the playoffs. Once the Giants get healthy at WR, they’ll be a force to reckon with in the playoffs.
This would, of course, make the Eagles the pretender. Vick for all is flash and fury on the field is still a very fallible QB. Sure, he’s improved his accuracy (his completion percentage is up to nearly 64%) and he is now a pass first, run second, QB, but his decision making skills, in particular when it comes to sliding vs. running head first, are still a huge area of concern. The Eagles are a pretender because Vick’s dynamic play makes him susceptible to injury, and I predict before the year is out he’ll get injured again thus jeopardizing an Eagles playoff run.
Well, this leaves the two crappy teams, Dallas (4-9) and Washington (5-8). Dallas has talent, but no heart, and Washington has disgruntled talent with a murmuring heart. In the years to come maybe these two teams will piece it together, however, in the meantime they stink and are only given attention for their public follies (the benching of McNabb, the firing of Bum’s Son) and the foibles of their rich, narcissistic, owners.
So, with all that said, why do sports reporters and journalist contend that the NFC EAST is the toughest division in football? Why are they showcased so much in Prime Time?
I like to think the answer to those two questions is intertwined, what I mean is that because the NFC EAST teams play in the biggest media markets (NY, Dallas, Washington, and Philly) they draw the most advertising dollars when they play in Prime Time which is why they are showcased so frequently, and because they are showcased so frequently, most news reporters tend to reason that they must be the best teams.
I could easily point out 3-4 other divisions that are far superior, like the AFC EAST, AFC NORTH, NFC SOUTH, and I would even argue that the NFC NORTH is better too. Think about it, the PATS, FINS, and JETS are easily better than the entire NFC EAST as are the RAVENS, STEELERS, and BROWNS. The NFC SOUTH has the two best teams in the entire NFC in the SAINTS and the FALCONS, plus don’t forget the BUCS, who are on the bubble of a playoff birth, and lastly you have the NFC NORTH with the PACK and the BEARS and the VIKS (who, should be much better than they are, but have struggled due to crappy coaching). So, there you have it. The NFC East is way overrated.
