Anderson Varejao and Daniel Gibson are linked to New York Knicks trade rumors as the team explores options in case they can’t get Carmelo Anthony in a trade with the Denver Nuggets. This is a smart way for the team to go right now, and getting someone like Varejao to come off the bench could suddenly make the Knicks an even more competitive team than they have already become.
According to Chris Broussard at ESPN, a scenario that could bring both Varejao and Gibson to the New York Knicks is already being worked out. It seems the Knicks would love to get Andre Iguodala from the Philadelphia 76ers as well, but that could take more assets than they are willing to give up at this time. Either way, these two trade possibilities would become back-up plans if they are unable to trade for Anthony.
It seemed like the progression in trade rumors was eventually going to lead to a deal where Anthony ended up in New York. In recent days, though, it has seemed like the New Jersey Nets are again at the forefront of those trade discussions, and they are offering a package that the Denver brass likes much better. That would mean Anthony would likely be willing to sign a contract extension with the Nets, even if nothing has been made public about it. Otherwise, why in the world would the Nets bet the future of the franchise on a wish?
The Cleveland Cavaliers are looking to unload salaries, making players like Varejao and Gibson available in the short term. New York has assets to offer up for both of them, but the question is whether it could be to the benefit of the organization to give up those assets for role players. They would need to trade someone like Eddy Curry and his expiring contract or draft picks in order to make this a best-case-scenario deal for them.
The NBA trade deadline is approaching a bit faster than it seemed back in November (the deadline is Feb. 24), and even with two months to go, it seems like there isn’t enough time for everything to be worked out amongst all the trade rumors. What Denver has to decide is if they are going to push things to the wire when it comes to making an Anthony deal, or if they are going to pull the trigger quickly to try to get the best combination of players back in a deal.
The New York Knicks have been on a cold streak lately, losing three straight games, and while the roster looks good, maybe now isn’t the time to give up assets for role players. Varejao and Gibson would be excellent role players on their current roster, but New York has to make 100 percent sure that they aren’t mortgaging the future of the franchise again, especially with Anthony and Chris Paul potentially hitting the free agent market very soon.
