Throw pillows add a splash of color and a little extra comfort to couches, chairs and beds. It’s easy to find throw pillows which are square, round and even cylindrical. It’s not hard to find colors and patterns which match or coordinate with most any décor in your home. What’s not easy is to find personalized pillows for your kids. To have these specially made is quite expensive and the colors and patterns are still limited.
You can easily make a single pillow, set of pillows, or an arrangement of personalized pillows that will look great in your child’s room. He or she will love a pillow that contains a single initial or even a whole row of pillows that spell out his or her name. You’ll never find those in stores!
Decide on a size for the pillows. If you’re making one pillow you might want to make it large. If you’ll be making a row of pillows to spell out the whole name you might want to make much smaller pillows.
Cut two pillow squares for each letter pillow you want to make. Although you can purchase appliques to make a letter for each pillow they are expensive, particularly if your child has more than four letters in his or her name. Use a stencil or draw letters freehand on felt or fabric to make your own appliques.
Use a zigzag stitch around the letter for one look or a straight stitch for a different appearance. Sew one letter on each pillow face and leave the matching fabric square blank. After the letters are sewn in place you can then sew the pillow itself.
Stack one letter square and one blank square on top of each other and place them so that the right sides face each other. Sew around three sides then turn the pillow right-side-out. Stuff the pillow and use the machine or a hand stitch to sew the opening shut.
One or two pillows with a child’s initials is a cute addition to their bedroom décor, but when you spell out the whole name, it’s a really cute look. Butt the pillows together, side-by-side, across the regular pillows. If your child’s name is short you might consider making a pillow to go on each end of the name. this pillow can feature a different image cut from felt or fabric, such as a simplistic vehicle or a giant flower.
You can create different looks by the various types of fabric you use. All the pillows can be exactly the same except for the lettering, or each pillow can have a different design. You don’t absolutely have to make the pillows square. Make round pillows if you prefer. Any of the letter pillow sets look nice in a girl’s room or a boy’s!
