Knight and Day is an action comedy film starring Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz as two mismatched heroes that finally work together in saving a scientist and his invention. Cameron Diaz plays June Havens, a classic car mechanic and restorer while Tom Cruise is a CIA agent out to save the world.
At first we are not sure that Roy Miller is playing for the good guys but eventually the story comes out that his partner tried to kill a genius scientist. This scientist has created a battery that can power a small city or a large nuclear vessel and Cruise needs to get the scientist and the battery to the rightful powers that be.
Roy Miller drugs and drags June around the world, an interesting scene changing tactic, while trying to protect her from the bad guys who are also trying to get the battery. The Zephyr, the high powered battery, was developed by this scientist who has some mental problems and needs a little hand holding from time to time but Miller and FBI Agent Fitzgerald were assigned to protect him.
Fitzgerald double crossed Miller and tried to kill the scientist and everyone else working on the project but Miller escaped with the Zephyr and the scientist. Problem is Fitzgerald was left behind to tell his own tale to the rest of the FBI who showed up right after Miller takes off with all the goods.
Miller first uses June as a mule to get the Zephyr through airport security but later when the FBI are hot on her trail he has no choice but to protect her as well. In the end Roy Miller and June Havens get the scientist to the good agents and use the Zephyr to bring justice to the double crossing agent.
I like Tom Cruise in most of his roles and he does a good job when he is let loose and doesn’t have to change his natural buoyant flair for action acting. When they try to make him be something he is not in his heart, at least it looks that way to me, his roles don’t work out well.
Knight and Day takes a common action drama plot and turns things on its head with some quick comedy and humor to lighten the mood and give us a few laughs. The film is not trying seriously to make you believe in perpetual motion batteries that can power cities or good guys always win with super powerful moves and smart well panned rescues.
The film is just a fun romp for an hour and fifty minutes of fun action that doesn’t need analysis in how implausible things are. I do have to disagree with many of the critics in movies as many seem to take movies a bit too seriously and don’t seem to want to watch a film just for the fun of it.
If you liked films like SWAT (2003) or the more recent Sherlock Holmes this one is sure to please the less demanding critics but more demanding fans of just plain fun films. I find myself once again disagreeing with critics and just enjoying the movie placed before me for what it is, a fast paced action comedy with some good acting and well done stunts.
Video for Knight and Day is very good with excellent color and nice deep shadows for the few areas of dark blacks but overall an exceptional looking film. The Blu-ray edition has some really nice looking video and several scenes really emphasis the colors and vivid high definition look of the film.
Audio is also near perfect with a clear voice and well done surround for the lossless HD Master Audio track that accompanies the Blu-ray feature. With much of the film being fast paced action you get a superb surround sound field and the rears really do a lot of work for several scenes.
Bonus content is lacking somewhat with less than an hour of making of features and a couple of others but lacking any audio commentary. The light load of extras makes this less of a bargain but what is here is worth at least one look after taking in the end credits for the song from the Black Eyed Peas.
Knight and Day is one of those odd ducks that is a good enough action comedy film as long as you don’t look too closely at plot or other parts of the film. The movie does just fine as a not so serious action comedy film unlike the Mission Impossible films Cruise is more famous for.
Knight and Day is a sure rental and well worth owning for a fun film to revisit when you want to relax and have a good laugh from a well acted action comedy.
