Take a deep, breath. Let it out slow, you got him. He’s in your guard, you can relax for a second. Wait for him to bring both arms down and grab you. That’s it! Take your left leg and push his arm back, now throw your leg on his shoulder. Take your right leg under his arm and try to hook your feet together! Good, now squeeze. He tapped.
This move, called the triangle choke, is one of the many moves taught at the Brazilian Jujitsu gym in Meridian, ID. The gym is run by USA Martial Arts Hall of Fame Keith Owen. Mr. Keith is a 4th degree Black in TAI Kung-FU, Black Sash in Wu Wei Gung-fu, Black Belt-One Stripe in Brazilian Jujitsu, a firearms instructor, owner of Triple Threat Training and teaches at the Idaho State Police Academy (Owen). To say Mr. Keith is a qualified instructor is an understatement.
As soon as you walk through the double doors you are met with a glare from a painted rhinoceros on the wall wearing a Gi and looking down at you with his arms crossed. You are then greeted with a smile and a hand shake from Mr. Keith and asked what you need. If you are interested in trying out Jujitsu then Mr. Keith will ask you what you are interested in learning. The gym offers two class types. A standing Sport Jujitsu class that centers more on kicks, punches and nerve strikes. The second will be the Brazilian Jujitsu class which will focus on grappling and ground submissions. You can try both classes and see which one you enjoy the most. Both classes are large enough so you get to work with a wide variety of people, but small enough so you aren’t lost in the crowd. If your kids are interested, the gym offers classes for children in both class types.
The class schedule is set up perfectly for those who work or go to school. Monday and Wednesday class start at 7:30pm and goes till 8:30pm. The Tuesday and Thursday class starts at 7:15pm and goes till 9:30pm. If you’re like me and needed to become active then I challenge you to come join this gym. You will be walking away after every class feeling satisfied and happy you joined.
