Mila Kunis and James Franco have both described themselves as gay…but of course their use of the word is more complicated than it appears at first glance.
So before guys get all excited about this series of events: Mila Kunis stars in a gay sex scene with Natalie Portman; Mila Kunis breaks up with Macaulay Culkin; and Mila Kunis refers to herself as “gay”, I guess it’s a good idea to go ahead and clarify her use of the word.
In an interview with “The Advocate”, Mila Kunis tells the magazine that she’s been called “a gay man in a woman’s body” (which I guess just makes her a woman with good fashion sense that urinates standing up?). Of course the description makes very little sense, and Mila Kunis further tries to explain herself by stating that she’s “always gravitated toward gay people” (I could make a really inappropriate joke about Macaulay Culkin here, but this is as far as I’m going with it). She also describes having a hipster gay friend that she attends gay functions with and suffers through bad hipster music for (at least she’s got someone to help her get through her breakup; eight years with Macaulay Culkin is probably hard to recover from).
And James Franco apparently is also getting in on the new hot trend of calling oneself gay. The actor is known for playing gay characters in movies like “Milk” and “Howl” (he was also in the bromantic comedy “Pineapple Express”), and the roles have definitely brought his sexuality into question. However, James Franco has taken the high road by not treating such allegations as being disgusting or degrading, instead responding by explaining that there’s more to characters (and human beings) than sexual orientation.
However, a recent quote from James Franco is rather confusing. After trying to explain why he’s taken an interest in the characters he has in the past, he offers a more succinct explanation: Or, you know what, maybe I’m just gay.” But don’t get too excited; James Franco has been in a relationship with actress Ahna O’Reilly for quite some time now (maybe he’s a gay woman in a man’s body?).
So why all the seeming misuse of the word “gay”? Perhaps it’s Mila Kunis’ and James Franco’s way of trying to make being gay more socially acceptable by way of showing that they’re not afraid to describe themselves as such. Unfortunately, there are probably those in the gay community that don’t want straight people going around telling everyone they’re gay for the hell of it (the word already has a problem with being used as a negative connotation by some).
But despite their silliness, it’s obvious that Mila Kunis and James Franco do care about equality for same-sex couples, and actors and actresses like them could really help the cause (and after Mila Kunis’ performance in “Black Swan” and James Franco’s in “Howl”, it would definitely be nice to see this dynamic duo get involved in a gay-friendly film together).
