The Metrodome roof collapse has thrown the Vikings-Giants game in question. Yet when the Metrodome roof was set to collapse, it knocked the Brett Favre debate off the front pages. Before this incident, all of the discussion over the Vikings-Giants game was on Favre’s condition. This finally could have been the historic day where his consecutive start streak ended at long last. But then, the Metrodome roof decided to collapse to bail Favre out.
The conditions already did Favre a favor by postponing the Vikings-Giants clash to Monday night. With an extra day to rest, it would give him more time to rest, and get his hurt shoulder into better shape. But he could have even more rest, if the NFL can’t find another site to play the game.
Thanks to the Metrodome roof collapse, the battle has to be moved somewhere else. If Favre is to start the Vikings-Giants game, however, it will likely have to be in another dome. The Golden Gophers’ TCF Bank Stadium is a possibility, but that would leave both teams playing in the freezing Minnesota cold at night.
If that happens, then the risk could be too great for Favre to withstand. In any case, they might not want to subject any of the players to that, so another dome is a strong possibility. The current buzz is that Detroit’s Ford Field is a possible site, and would allow the Vikings and Giants to play indoors, in front of a TV crew.
In this case, having the Metrodome roof subject to collapse would be a blessing in disguise – at least for Favre. According to ESPN’s Ed Werder, Favre told him that he couldn’t have played if it started at 1 pm today, as first scheduled. If they can get it into Ford Field or another dome, it would eliminate another big obstacle to the legendary streak.
At that point, it would all depend on Favre’s shoulder again, which is still rather bothersome. Even if he can actually start, he would probably be doubtful to go the whole game. The Giants have knocked several quarterbacks out this season, and it might not take much to bring Favre down.
But if the Vikings-Giants game does extend Favre’s streak, it might be equivalent to an act of God. Multiple retirements and injuries have done nothing to end this streak, and now even Mother Nature could be keeping him in action.
Of course, this might also be for the Giants’ benefit, as speculation is that they’d have a better chance facing a banged up Favre. If the Metrodome roof collapse doesn’t get the game postponed again, they could find that out tomorrow night.
