I watched Mega quakes on the history channel yesterday and I was going to take notes on all the factual information and share it. Then I had the thought that most people likely know a lot about the plates under our earth. I decided to share my opinion of what would happen in the middle of a quake that would measure a 10. I will say that even the thought of this occuring anywhere scares me.
I learned something new about quakes. There are rogue quakes that can happen anywhere at any time. The word rogue unnerves me to start with and putting it with the word earth and quake is a scary thought to say the least.
This was a documentary that covered a lot of information about quakes over thousands of years. It was stated that when the earth was first formed there was one large plate. I didn’t know this so it was new information for me to think about. As time passed the plates moved apart and from what I could tell this is where the trouble started. I’m certainly not a scientist but I do have a fair amount of knowledge about the damage they can do.
I remember the 1994 earthquake in Los Angeles. I watched the news coverage for days. I felt so sorry for all the people involved. I still have the pictures in my mind of the giant slabs of concrete collapsing. The devastation and loss of lives will be with me as long as I live. California is known for their earthquakes. They have so many fault lines. I will say that I know California has special building codes and I believe that is a very good thing.
When I was watching this documentary they started reviewing what could happen if a mega quake did take place on a scale of 1 to 10 and a mega quake being a 10. There would be so much destruction that water, gas and food supplies would be affected. Pipes would be destroyed carrying these vital supplies.
What worried me the most was when they said people that survived would discover they weren’t prepared for this type of total destruction.
I started thinking about this and wondering what we could do. The first proplem I could think of was what would we do if our houses were destroyed but we survived in the surrounding devastation. The first thing I will say is I hope we would all survive but then what would we do.
I keep extra bottled water in my home at all times and my pantry is stocked but if my house is destroyed these supplies will do me no good whatsoever.
I thought about different scenarios and the only rational plan I could come up with was that we would have to wait for outside help to come and bring supplies and take us to a safe area. I see no other way to prepare for a mega quake. I doubt there would be any housing codes that would sustain a building in a mega quake.
The devastion would be so heavy that we would be fortunate to walk away alive. There will be so many injuries and unfortunately deaths.
A good thought in the middle of a tragedy like this would be the compassion that humankind has for fellow man in the middle of a terrible event.
China had an earthquake a few years ago people and governments around the globe came together to help. It brought tears to my eyes to see the compassion for all the people. I was very thankful for all the help that they received. They opened their borders for people to come in and help. It just goes to show when tragedy occurs how people come together. Churches, governments, Red cross, and many relief organizations work as a team. I think this shows how much compassion we really do have.
After watching this documentary what I finally decided was that if we did survive an event like this we could rest assured that help would be coming for us. I think that is a very good thought.
