The Mega Millions lottery results were nearly historic. As it stood, the Mega Millions lottery results finally paid out one of the biggest jackpots of all time. However, the $355 million jackpot was just shy of being the largest in history. If no one hit last night, then it would have crossed $400 million, and perhaps trended toward half a billion. Instead, the results may have brought an anticlimactic end to this drought, at least from a perspective of history.
The jackpot jumped over $100 million in between Friday and Tuesday’s drawings, making it the fourth largest ever in this game. If the drought continued, then the $390 million record, set in 2007, would have been easily shattered.
Yet the Mega Millions results had two players draw tickets of 4, 8, 15, 25, 47 and 42. As such, the giant jackpot will be divided in half, instead of being paid out to one individual. Therefore, it will look a little less gigantic than advertised.
If only one player had won, he or she may have had the largest individual payoff of all time. The most that one ticket was worth in the game was $175 million back in 2005. In that case, seven people in Anaheim owned the ticket, and won a $315 million jackpot.
In all of the other historic Mega Millions results, the jackpot was split by two or more people. The record-setting $390 million pot was taken by two people as well, as they ultimately split $223 million after taxes. Since this grand prize is worth a bit less, these two winners may just end up with more than $100 million, once taxes factor in.
Of course, that won’t be certain until lottery officials find the winners. They just know that the tickets were sold in Idaho and Washington state, yet the lucky people haven’t come forward yet. When they do, they will have to choose between the cash option or the lump sum payout.
Although last night’s lottery results will make the two players rich, others have to wonder what could have been. Over $400 million would have been at stake on Friday, which could have made one individual even richer. Despite this notable drought, a lot of lottery records appear to be safe at the end, although it was a close call.
It might be a very long time before the results for Mega Millions are this impressive. At the moment, players will have to settle for much smaller jackpots for a while. However, since this kind of thing happens every several months or so, the records could be threatened again before long.
