Any artist knows that one of the best gateways to getting their music to the public is through the DJ’s; and if you’re a hip hop artist from CT then you’re probably familiar with DJ Maxx, owner of Maxxentertainment and co-owner of Blazinradio.com. Milton “DJ Maxx” Velez from Meriden, CT has been on his DJ “game and grind” for the last 18 years and has been dedicated to heavily promoting local hip hop artists for the last two years.
Maxx recalls “playing around with tapes, records, and 45’s” in his teens and in 1988 with the promotional help of his older brother, Maxx set off his career by spinning the jams at house parties of friends and family. Buzz spread about Maxx’s ability to jump start the party guests with his mixes of popular dance tunes, professionalism and upbeat personality which soon landed him gigs at local night clubs. After hustling hard a few years, Maxx took his love for music along with his entrepreneurship and started his mobile DJ service, Maxxentertainment in which he plays music of all genres for parties and corporate events.
Being a huge hip hop fan, Maxx’s main agenda has been helping local artists get their music heard by putting together mix CD’s of the highest sound quality and playing their hits on his internet radio station, Blazinradio.com. Maxx stated “Connecticut artists get overlooked because they don’t have the money to promote themselves.” With a sincere interest in wanting CT artists to make it, Maxx makes up to 1,000 CD’s, free of charge, for artists and floods as many venues with them as he can. His hard work hasn’t gone unnoticed and Blazinradio.com has gained about 1,400 weekly listeners and his mix CD “CT: Bringing that Fire” (which showcases artists such as Scandle, NoEdall, and Krystal LaReign) won himself “CT Entertainer of the Year” at the Holla-Back Video Music Awards.
When I asked Maxx what some of the major stumbling blocks faced by local hip hop artists are, he stated that besides the lack of support, CT artists lack unity. “Meriden has everything to offer; writers, producers, rock stars, DJ’s, rappers….if we put that all together, it would be crazy!” Truer words have never been spoken and with the assistance of promoters like himself, CT artists have a solid chance of making it in the industry.
